PG's Jason Shadrick is On Location in Chicago, IL, at the House of Blues where he catches up with Mr. Big's guitarist Paul Gilbert (also a Premier Guitar columnist) who walks us through his live rig containing his signature Ibanez guitars, Marshall amps and an expansive pedalboard.

There are a lot of great players out there and not every one has to like Paul's music. I own all of Paul's CD's but I am more into Ritchie Kotzen or Gary Hoey with out going into the real innovators of MacAlpine,Vai, Petrucci, Satch. It's all good not everyone like's the same people or consider them great but Gilbert is more of a Zappa genre with him solo album's but not quite Vai but alot of Eddie.. So that it self is enough for a entire generation to miss Gilbert all together..

@Fim Firstens - I'm sure we would ALL love to hear the amazingly, creative, non "radio friendly", non "sissy pop" you create on a daily basis. Hmm.. lets see. Paul Gilbert: has been touring the world for 3 decades, is considered a guitar innovator and has sold countless albums. You: Nowheresville douchebag.

What a generous and approachable guy. Firstens, you WISH all those soccer moms were at your gigs. At least Gilbert has a long term career.

Wow... All that gear just to make dull, radio-friendly rock. Another talented musician without an ounce of creativity. Mr. Big... LOLS! This crap was sissy-pop back in the 80's, now it's just a soundtrack for white-trash soccer moms.

How can you not love him?I'm sad to say that i didn't found out about him until 2005 whem i bought " Burning Organ# and holy crap did i see the light!!He's the essense of all that's good if you're like me (born 1960)and got your ears and taste embalmed in the sounds of so many good rock bands that i almost feel ashamed when i think of what the generation of recent years had to put up with. But every thing is not lost,i've seen him twice live with my 2 boys (21 and 23 years old) at Debaser and Göta källare in Stockholm and they loved him! These days i got almost everything he's released and love his more pop/singing style stuff just as much as his more brutal records like Fuzz Universe,Silence followed by......Paul if i were to go to that famous desert island and i could have your collected works with me all would be well! Ps Don't even bother to make a comment about my horrid english and if you cant help yourselves do it in Swedish so i can tell you to go and F#%k your self!

Oh man, Paul is the same dude he was back in 1986 at GIT when he was sitting in an open counseling room whaling away on what was I assume an original Epi Wilshire. He's aways had chops to spare and a great sense of humor. Rock on! What struck me the most here is the casual comment "My hearing is going". Yikes! Now, I know Paul has had issues with his hearing over the years which is tragic for any musician. PG should do a serious article about this if they haven't yet. I'm 45 and have started to really notice some top end loss in my right ear of late most probably due to things we can't control like aging, to things we can control but don't think about at the time like Dave Murray's (Iron Maiden) Marshall stacks at a show I attended at 15 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yrbsNRN lWA) -- I was right up against the stage directly in front of his stacks, not 10ft away, my ears were ringing for a month after that show and I didn't think it was a big deal. This is not a good start if you end up being a recording engineer and guitar player, you kinda need your ears -- so, important safety tip kids -- wear protection.
