Cort Announces Arona Bass in Collaboration With Sandberg Guitars

The new Arona models are designed to capture the very essence of European style and use a body made of either swamp ash or alder, depending on finish.

Northbrook, IL (July 12, 2011) -- Cort Guitars announced their collaboration with noted German bass manufacturer, Sandberg Guitars. Together, they release the new Arona bass in four and five string models utilizing the elements of Sandberg’s engineering and design along with Cort’s state of the art production facilities. The Arona basses are now available in retailers worldwide.

The new Arona models are designed to capture the very essence of European style and use a body made of either swamp ash or alder, depending on finish. The three piece, bolt-on maple neck is shaped with the famed Sandberg “C” shape and adorned with a rosewood fingerboard. All hardware is chrome plated, including its unique Sandberg designed bridge.

The electronics will set these instruments apart from their contemporaries as Cort is the first manufacturer to be using the new Desonic by Delano pickup system. The Delano pickup system had been exclusively used on very expensive, custom-built basses and a favorite of builders throughout Europe. The new Desonic pickup system will include two huge bar magnet pickups with 9.5mm pole slugs and custom coils to capture every aspect of the strings vibration. The pickups are complimented with active electronics featuring a push/pull volume control and separate balance, treble and bass controls designed to provide the musician with the flexibility to achieve a variety of tones. Detailed features such as the graphite nut, zero fret and D’Addario EXP165 strings make this bass an exceptional find in its price range.

MSRP for Arona 4: $795
MSRP for Arona 5: $850

The session ace’s signature model offers a wide range of tones at the flip of a switch … or five.

Hello and welcome back to Mod Garage. Not long ago, I came home late from a band rehearsal, still overly excited about the new songs we played. I got myself a coffee (I know, it's a crazy procedure to calm down) and turned on the TV. I ended up with an old Bonanza episode from the ’60s, the mother of all Western TV series. Hearing the theme after a long time instantly reminded me of the great Al Caiola, who is the prolific session guitarist who plays on the song. With him in mind, I looked up the ’60s Epiphone “Al Caiola” model and decided I want to talk about the Epiphone/Gibson Tone Expressor system that was used in this guitar.

Embracing the idea of an acoustic flattop made with anything other than wood can, understandably, be tricky stuff. There’s a lot of precedent for excellent-sounding acoustics built with alternative materials, though. Carbon-fiber flattops can sound amazing and I’ve been hooked by the sound and playability of Ovation and Adamas instruments many times.
