Larry Carlton Master Class DVD

Interactive video course covers improvising, technique and tone

St. Petersburg, FL (November 12, 2007) Ć¢ā‚¬ā€œ Larry Carlton, one of the most prolific and accomplished guitarists ever, has a new instructional course: 335 BLUES. The Interactive Video Course, released in association with TrueFire and Robert Williams, is a Master Class with "Mr. 335" himself -- his first such course in 20 years. It has 80 video lessons featuring Carlton''s signature insights for blues guitar improvisation, technique and tone.

Larry presents 335 BLUES in three main sections:

  • Blues grooves in a variety of feels, keys and tempos. For each groove, Carlton demonstrates three choruses-worth of comping and three choruses of improvisational soloing followed by an explanation of what he played and why he played it. Viewers then use the video, charts, tab, notation and practice rhythm tracks to make the material their own.
  • Essential techniques and improvisational approaches. Bending and vibrato are demonstrated and broken down in unprecedented detail. Use of motifs, space and phrasing are likewise presented in an amazing, ear-opening fashion. Other gems of insight in this section include use of the melodic minor in blues, "knuckle voicings" and recommendations for how to approach both practice and playing.
  • The third section covers a wide variety of topics ranging from the technical to the philosophical. Tone and how to go about tweaking equipment to achieve it, is presented comprehensively. Insight on recording, jamming and performing with other musicians is also addressed. A few anecdotes and even a little show and tell on the Steely Dan studio rig make this section likely to be watched over and over again.

Larry Carlton''s 335 BLUES is optimized for solid intermediate to advanced players and is presented across four interactive video CD-ROMs (Windows and Mac compatible). It features 80 full-length video lessons, text overviews, practice rhythm tracks, standard notation and interactive Power Tab so you can "see" and "hear" the tab and notation played out at any tempo. TrueFire''s video lesson player features zoom, frame advance, looping and other handy controls.

A rig meant to inspire! That’s Jerry Garcia with his Doug Irwin-built Tiger guitar, in front of his Twin Reverb + McIntosh + JBL amp rig.

Three decades after the final Grateful Dead performance, Jerry Garcia’s sound continues to cast a long shadow. Guitarists Jeff Mattson of Dark Star Orchestra, Tom Hamilton of JRAD, and Bella Rayne explain how they interpret Garcia’s legacy musically and with their gear.

ā€œI met Jerry Garcia once, in 1992, at the bar at the Ritz Carlton in New York,ā€ Dark Star Orchestra guitarist Jeff Mattson tells me over the phone. Nearly sixty-seven years old, Mattson is one of the longest-running members of the Grateful Dead tribute band scene, which encompasses hundreds of groups worldwide. The guitarist is old enough to have lived through most of the arc ofthe actual Grateful Dead’s career. As a young teen, he first absorbed their music by borrowing their seminal records, American Beauty and Workingman’s Dead, brand new then, from his local library to spin on his turntable. Around that same moment, he started studying jazz guitar. Between 1973 and 1995, Mattson saw the Dead play live hundreds of times, formed the landmark jam bandZen Tricksters, and later stepped into theJerry Garcia lead guitarist role with the Dark Star Orchestra (DSO), one of the leading Dead tribute acts.
