From classic cars to vintage guitars, short-lived designs are often the most sought-after. Sheptone goes the distance to achieve true vintage tone with the introduction of the Miles single coil bass pickup. Designed to accurately reproduce the tone of the milestone Fender 1951 Precision Bass, Sheptone's Miles bass pickup stays true to the original design specifications and can transform a contemporary bass guitar into a living legend.
Sheptone's construction begins with vintage-accurate fiberboard flatwork and Alnico 5 magnets for excellent performance. Plain enamel magnet wire, 42 AWG, is scatterwound for great harmonics and string-wrapped to protect the single coil. Average resistance is 7.32kohms.
The single-coil design of the Miles bass pickup has a dynamic response that delivers classic, smooth sound with a fat, yet tight, low-end. By simply rolling back the tone, players can walk right into a classic upright bass riff. This is vintage bass tone at its finest.
Introducing the Miles Pickup from Sheptone
The Sheptone Miles 1951 P Bass Pickup Demo by Steve Cook
The single-coil design of the Miles bass pickup has a dynamic response that delivers classic, smooth sound with a fat, yet tight, low-end. By simply rolling back the tone, players can walk right into a classic upright bass riff. This is vintage bass tone at its finest.
While the classic P Bass served as the true-vintage inspiration for the Miles bass pickup, a special cause is the true heart and soul of Sheptone's design. The son of Nashville bassist Steve Cook, 4-year-old Miles, was diagnosed with hearing loss and recently received life-changing cochlear implants. Miles and the Cook family are staying the course and overcoming obstacles on their journey, and Sheptone wants to help others do the same. Proceeds from the sale of the namesake Miles bass pickup will be donated to further enhance research and education in hearing loss.

A high-output 'bucker aimed at adding some fire to Strat-style guitars.
Julian, CA (April 16, 2019) -- Sheptone proudly introduces the Wanker humbucker, in celebration of all guitarists known to crank—or wank—their way to sonic bliss. With a humbucker that can handle the heat, players are finally free to enjoy themselves, wanking their way to self-expression without blowing up their tone or alienating their bandmates.
Built specifically for Strat-style shred sleds, the Wanker was developed for players who like to push boundaries with higher output. Popularized in the 1980s, these pickups were overly wound just to provide higher output, but that approach came at a high cost in tone. Meanwhile, Sheptone is a manufacturer that has earned its reputation for pickups that capture the best qualities of the best-sounding Patent Applied For (PAF) pickups of the 1950s and 1960s. With the launch of the Wanker, they have achieved the best of both worlds—a tightly wound, high-output humbucker for the strat-style guitar that doesn’t sacrifice tone.
The Wanker starts with 53 mm spacing to accommodate Floyd Rose-style bridges, F-spacing fixed bridges, and short feet. It has four-conductor wiring and Alnico 5 magnets. As with other Sheptone humbuckers, resistance will vary, as the winding process goes strictly by the number of turns, but it tends to be around 10.5. This gives the Wanker plenty of power to drive the signal chain, but not so much that it begins to suck the tone out of it.
The Wanker’s short feet are better suited for the sleeker, low-profile guitar designs that today’s players are seeking and guitar builders are making. Wooden spacers stay true to the original pursuit of tone, and the German silver base plate is ideal for tonal neutrality.
The Wanker will be available in a variety of bobbin color configurations of white, cream, and black, or with German silver covers plated in either nickel or gold. Pricing starts at $129.00.

A vintage-inspired pickup that aims to warm up instruments that lean towards the brighter side.
Julian, CA (November 12, 2018) -- Guitarists looking to warm up a bright-sounding guitar or amp have a new solution in Sheptone’s Tribute 2 neck and bridge pickups for electric guitar. Hand-built with Alnico 2 degaussed magnets, "Patent Applied For" 49.2 mm pole spacing, butyrate bobbins, nickel silver base plates, long feet, and vintage braided lead wire, Sheptone’s Tribute 2 pickups are designed to replicate the classics, but with a personality and delivery all their own.
The tone generated from Tribute 2 neck and bridge pickups is a result of the number of winds and the Alnico 2 magnets with lower magnetic pull, which allow the guitar strings to vibrate more freely. Upon listening, players will note the warmer sound with clear mids, spongier bass and a softer attack. Typically with Alnico 2 magnets, a squishier bottom end occurs in the bridge pickup, while a muddier, darker tone is generated from the neck pickup. Sheptone mitigates this effect in the Tribute 2’s in the winding. In this process, Sheptone scatter winds 57-58 spec 42 enameled wire to a specific number of turns per bobbin. This technique effectively creates more air space in the coil and lowers the distributed capacitance, enabling more treble to come through and slightly increasing the resonant peak of the pickup. The resulting tone will not only satisfy Alnico 2 afficionados, but will also get the attention of other vintage guitar fans looking for a special pickup with a reasonable price tag.
Sheptone’s Tribute 2 pickups help players make a statement both tonally and esthetically, as they’re available in a variety of bobbin color combinations or with nickel silver covers plated in nickel, chrome or gold. They can be purchased individually, starting at $129 each, or as a bridge-and-neck set.
