GALLERY: L.A. Amp Show 2011

The latest boutique amps, guitars, and pedals on display at the annual Van Nuys gear gathering.

"Luxxtone Guitars showed off several custom models at the LA Amp Show. The Chopper Series boasts various body-styles inspired by classic Fenders, while the El Machete has a body-style and appointments similar to a Charvel рsuper strat.с рThe main goal with all our guitars is to give them a worn-in feel with tons of vibeяlike it's been played for years,с says Luxxtoneуs Jerry Bizon. рWe specialize in nicely-worn necks that are kind of dirty and have rounded edges with great attention to detail in the fretwork and playability.с All models feature their custom fabricated hardware, bridges, and jack sockets that are exclusive to Luxxtone. While they generally use Motor City pickups, Luxxtone is willing to use anything a player wants. All of the models and options are custom, and the typical price range for their handmade instruments is between $1900 and $2700. "

LA LOM from left: Jake Faulkner, Nicholas Baker, and Zac Sokolow

Guitarist Zac Sokolow takes us on a tour of tropical guitar styles with a set of the cover songs that inspired the trio’s Los Angeles League of Musicians.

There’s long been a cottage industry, driven by record collectors, musicologists, and guitar-heads, dedicated to the sounds that happened when cultures around the world got their hands on electric guitars. The influence goes in all directions. Dick Dale’s propulsive, percussive adaptation of “Misirlou”—a folk song among a variety of Eastern Mediterranean cultures—made the case for American musicians to explore sounds beyond our shores, and guitarists from Ry Cooder and David Lindley to Marc Ribot and Richard Bishop have spent decades fitting global guitar influences into their own musical concepts.
