Hagerman Amplification Introduces Thermionic Reinforcer Preamp

Guitarists can use this pedal to add more channels to their existing amplifier or enhance a solid-state power section with honest tube tone.

Hagerman Amplification has introduced the new Thermionic Reinforcer, an all-tube guitar preamplifier pedal with exceptionally versatile sonic capabilities.

Employing a pair of 12AX7 tubes running at high voltage, this pedal has enough output to directly feed a power amplifier via effects loop (or operate as a normal pedal). Guitarists can use this pedal to add more channels to their existing amplifier or enhance a solid-state power section with honest tube tone.

There are two clipping modes: classic tube overdrive, and a novel high-gain symmetrical clipping circuit recently developed by Hagerman. This proprietary new tube clipping circuit is exclusive to the Thermionic Reinforcer, allowing the pedal to deliver a more aggressive, modern sound.

Another key feature is the pedal’s Contour control, a tone circuit placed ahead of clipping stages that offers the ability to tighten the sound, akin to placing a Klon or TS ahead of the pedal.

The pedal’s Bass and Treble controls are placed post-clipping and provide a wide range of tonality from bright to dark.

Powered by standard 9-volt DC external supply, the Thermionic Reinforcer’s two clipping modes, Contour control, and Bass/Treble knobs offer an extraordinary range of options, from mild overdrive to blistering distortion.

Key features include:

  • True bypass
  • 38dB maximum gain
  • 2 x 12AX7 tubes
  • Contour, Drive, Bass, Treble, Level controls
  • 9V @ 700mA power

The Thermionic Reinforcer is priced at $319 and can be purchased at hagamps.com.

Know what a wavefolder does to your guitar signal? If you don’t, that’s okay. I didn’t either until I started messing around with the all-analog Cosmodio Instruments Gravity Well. It’s a dual-effect pedal with a tremolo and wavefolder, the latter more widely used in synthesis that , at a certain threshold, shifts or inverts the direction the wave is traveling—in essence, folding it upon itself. Used together here, they make up what Cosmodio calls a sonic refractor.

Does the type of finish on an electric guitar—whether nitro, poly, or oil and wax—really affect its tone?

There’s an allure to the sound and feel of a great electric guitar. Many of us believe those instruments have something special that speaks not just to the ear but to the soul, where every note, every nuance feels personal. As much as we obsess over the pickups, wood, and hardware, there’s a subtler, more controversial character at play: the role of the finish. It’s the shimmering outer skin of the guitar, which some think exists solely for protection and aesthetics, and others insist has a role influencing the voice of the instrument. Builders pontificate about how their choice of finishing material may enhance tone by allowing the guitar to “breathe,” or resonate unfettered. They throw around terms like plasticizers, solids percentages, and “thin skin” to lend support to their claims. Are these people tripping? Say what you will, but I believe there is another truth behind the smoke.
