Charvel Releases Updated Pro-Mod DK24, San Dimas & So-Cal Guitars

Newly updated models feature Seymour Duncan pickups and graphite-reinforced necks for their high-performance Pro-Mod line.

A brazen instrument for the progressive guitarist searching for an unparalleled spectrum of sound. The alder Dinky body is topped with poplar burl and features a sculpted shredder’s cut heel and a scalloped lower back bout for easy upper access to the fingerboard. The bolt-on caramelized maple “speed” neck has graphite reinforcement, silky-smooth hand-rubbed satin urethane back finish, heel-mount truss rod adjustment wheel and Luminlay side dots. Its 12”-16” compound radius caramelized maple fingerboard features comfortable rolled edges, 24 jumbo frets, 4mm pearloid dot inlays and Graph Tech TUSQ XL nut. Brimming with versatility courtesy of the mini two-way toggle switch for series and parallel, this axe features a custom Seymour Duncan Full Shred SH-10B bridge and custom Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro APH-1N neck pickups combine for a crisp top-end with low-end articulation, along with soaring highs and silky lows. Other features include five-way blade pickup switching, Stratocaster-style skirt knobs for the volume control (with 500K EVH Bourns low-friction potentiometer) and no-load tone control and a Gotoh Custom 510 recessed tremolo bridge. Luxe looks and a sweet playing feel make this Squier an anniversary edition worth celebrating.

Slinky playability. Very nice construction quality. An attractive, celebratory mash-up of Fender style elements.

Neck feels slightly generic.

My years-long search for the “right” Bigsby-outfitted box finally paid off. Now how do I make this sumbitch work in my band?

Considering the amount of time I’ve spent (here and elsewhere) talking about and lusting after Gretsch hollowbody guitars, it’s taken me a remarkably long time to end up with a big Bigsby-outfitted box I truly love. High-end Gretsches are pricey enough that, for a long time, I just couldn’t swing it. Years ago I had an Electromatic for a while, and it looked and played lovely, but didn’t have the open, blooming acoustic resonance I hoped for. A while later, I reviewed the stellar Players Edition Broadkaster semi-hollow, and it was so great in so many ways that I set my sights on it, eventually got one, and adore it to this day. Yet the full-hollowbody lust remained.
