Kittie’s 30th-anniversary tour rolled into Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl, and PG’s Chris Kies caught up with Morgan Lander and Tara McLeod to see what’s left of a rig that once meant hauling an SVT up a flight of stairs. Solar Power
Lander’s main guitar is a Solar Type-V. She’s played the V shape so long that any other body design feels wrong in her hands. Before Solar she was using an old Hamer loaded with EMGs, and further back, a Yamaha Pacifica.
Total Eclipse
McLeod’s ESP E-II Eclipse has Fishman pickups and an EverTune bridge, though the EverTune stays “disengaged” live—Kittie’s sets run song to song with no room for guitar changes, so she needs to tune fast. She moved to active pickups during the “Kittie 2.0” era, wanting more bite than her passive Les Paul gave her.
Drop and Give Me C
Kittie has used one tuning since 1996: drop C, low to high C–G–C–F–A–D. Both players stick to D’Addario strings: Lander runs .011–.056, while McLeod uses .011–.052 on the Eclipse, with a .056 on the bottom for the Gibson Les Paul goldtop shown here.
Morgan Lander’s Pedalboard
Years of fly dates pushed the band to shrink everything down to what fits in an overhead bin. Lander’s Line 6 HX Stomp does the work of the old rig: a 5150 model for the main rhythm and lead tone, a Tube Screamer in front for a boost, and a channel with a low octave she calls “the scaries,” saved for accents and the extended parts where she steps away from the mic. A Shure GLXD16+ digital wireless system handles her signal and her tuning, and a Radial ProDI passive direct box rounds out the board.
Tara McLeod’s Pedalboard
McLeod ran a Neural DSP Quad Cortex for years, but a hiccup mid-tour had her switch over to the same HX Stomp Lander uses, which made it easy to copy her settings and tweak from there. She employs the same 5150 and Tube Screamer models, plus a third channel built around an OCD model with a delay after it for a smoother lead tone. She runs the same Shure GLXD16+ and Radial ProDI as Lander.
