GALLERY: Born in the Sixties - Electric Guitars

A selection of guitars from each year of the 1960s are highlighted

1965 Rickenbacker Model 1993
Rickenbackers were sold in the UK in the sixties through the distributor Rose, Morris. The features of the Rickenbackers made for Rose, Morris (like this guitar) differed subtly from the American versions. The most notable change was a traditional "F" shaped soundhole, compared to the "slash" soundhole of the U.S. models. This Rose, Morris Rickenbacker Model 1993 has features are similar to those of a 330/12 except for the body binding on the top and back, this style of binding was used on the original 360s before the change to a rounded top in mid-1964. ā€œSometimes, Iā€™d like very much for my guitar to sound exactly like a supa cobra.ā€

Luthier Creston Lea tells us about his favorite dirt pedalā€”an Athens, Georgia-made stomp that lets his guitar be a hero.

Letā€™s face it: Nobody can tell what overdrive pedal youā€™re using. Whether youā€™re in a carpeted suburban basement accompanying the hired clown at your nephewā€™s fifth birthday party or standing on the spot-lit monitor at Wembley, not one person knows whether the pedal at your feet cost $17 or $700, has true bypass, or has an internal DIP switch. Nobody leaning against the barn-dance corncrib or staunching a nosebleed up in the stadiumā€™s cheap seats is thinking, ā€œHeavens yes!! THAT is the sound of a silicone diode!ā€

Guitar: The Green Snake

Reader T. Moody turned this Yamaha Pacifica body into a reptilian rocker.

With a few clicks on Reverb, a reptile-inspired shred machine was born.

With this guitar, I wanted to create a shadowbox-type vibe by adding something you could see inside. I have always loved the Yamaha Pacifica guitars because of the open pickup cavity and the light weight, so I purchased this body off Reverb (I think I am addicted to that website). I also wanted a color that was vivid and bold. The seller had already painted it neon yellow, so when I read in the description, ā€œYou can see this body from space,ā€ I immediately clicked the Buy It Now button. I also purchased the neck and pickups off of Reverb.
