Back in May, Austin, Texas’ very own “doom wop” trio, Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol, rattled into Nashville to play at Third Man Records’ Blue Room. Ahead of the chaos, PG’s Chris Kies slipped in to meet up with guitarist Leo Lydon and bassist Aaron Metzdorf for this new Rig Rundown. Tune in now to get the scoop. Brought to you by D’Addario.
Green Monster
Lydon’s go-to guitar is this 8-string show-stopper, custom-built by a friend. It features Seymour Duncan Nazgûl and Sentient pickups, a 27.5" scale length, ebony fretboard with maple and wenge neck, and HipShot bridge and tuners. Lydon uses green Tortex picks and D’Addario NYXL strings.
Golden Days
This gold Jackson DKA8M is on hand for Lydon as well. It’s got a 28" scale length, and Lydon swapped out the tuners, bridge, and knob, plus disconnected the killswitch.
Double Trouble
Lydon uses a two-amp rig to maintain clarity. The Orange Terror Bass acts as a preamp for the low end, running into a 1x15 cabinet, while a 5150 head handles the high end, running into a 2x12 cabinet.
Leo Lydon’s Pedalboard
Lydon’s board hosts a TC Electronic PolyTune 2, a custom Radial TwinCity ABY Amp Switcher, EarthQuaker Devices Life Pedal V1, EarthQuaker Tentacles, EarthQuaker Talon, Donner Noise Killer, and Wampler Faux Tape Echo Delay.
Splatter Matter
Metzdorf digs this colorfully decorated 1986 Charvel 3B, featuring EMG pickups installed in 1991. He picked it up from the original owner, who did the paintjob himself back in high school. The tone knob and pickup selector are disabled; the remaining controls include a master volume and what Metzdorf describes as a “tilt switch.” It takes .045–.105-gauge string sets, and Metzdorf is still trying out different brands.
Headless 4-String
This Hohner B2—a copy of a Steinberger L-series bass—makes appearances for special moments in the set.
Minnie Me
Metzdorf’s amp rig includes a Demeter Amplification Minnie 800D running into an 8x10 cab, plus an Acoustic Image Focus SA running into a Marshall 2x15.
Aaron Metzdorf’s Pedalboard
Metzdorf runs a Sonic Research Turbo Tuner ST-200, Boss DC-2w, Xotic Effects SL Drive, and Origin Effects BassRig Super Vintage. A Cioks DC5 powers the collection.
