Fender Announces Fender University in August

Fender University''s inaugural session will take place August 21-24, and is limited to 35 attendees.

Scottsdale, Arizona (May 7, 2008) ā€“ Fender has been busy this week; first the Elvis Costello Signature Jazzmaster, now, Fender University.

The company describes Fender University as an exclusive new music education program for guitar enthusiasts worldwide. The inaugural session will take place Aug. 21-24, 2008, and will offer exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the companyā€™s manufacturing headquarters and world renowned Fender Custom Shop in Corona, California. The curriculum will also include a series of music workshops, hands-on educational experiences, performance opportunities, special guest appearances and insight on everything musicians need to know about the magic of Fender.

Enrollment into the inaugural session is limited to only 35 guitar and bass scholars worldwide, and is open to players of all skill levels and musical styles over the age of 21. Registration information is available exclusively through fender.com/university.

Fender recently appointed Richard McDonald as Honorary Dean of Fender University. McDonald began his music career as an aspiring student of Fender at age 14 and later went on to become a professional musician for nearly a decade before joining Fender Musical Instruments in 1993. He currently serves as Senior Vice President of Global Marketing for the company.

ā€œThe legacy of Fender is so much greater than any single artist, recording, person, place or thing. When that undeniable power is harnessed into a hands-on experience that allows musicians to connect the rich history of Fender with all of the excitement of the present and future, amazing things will happen,ā€ said McDonald. ā€œWe are delighted to be able to open our doors to a few eager students who will be offered the rare ability to graduate to the highest levels of the spirit of rock nā€™ roll.ā€

With the E Street Band, heā€™s served as musical consigliere to Bruce Springsteen for most of his musical life. And although he stands next to the Boss onstage, guitar in hand, heā€™s remained mostly quiet about his work as a playerā€”until now.

Iā€™m stuck in Stevie Van Zandtā€™s elevator, and the New York City Fire Department has been summoned. Itā€™s early March, and I am trapped on the top floor of a six-story office building in Greenwich Village. On the other side of this intransigent door is Van Zandtā€™s recording studio, his guitars, amps, and other instruments, his Wicked Cool Records offices, and his man cave. The latter is filled with so much day-glo baby boomer memorabilia that itā€™s like being dropped into a Milton Glaser-themed fantasy landā€”a bright, candy-colored chandelier swings into the room from the skylight.

Some musical momentsā€”whether riffs, melodies, or solosā€”bypass our ears and tug at our heartstrings.

It had to be in the early part of 1990, and I donā€™t know how or why, but I purchased Steady On, the debut album from singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin. Upon my first listen I knew it was something very special. By the time the third track, ā€œShotgun Down the Avalanche,ā€ came pouring from my ancient Dahlquist DQ10s, I was a fan. The song features an instrumental breakā€”not a guitar solo per se, but more like a stringed-instrument vignette that cascaded seamlessly through a number of sounds created by guitarist-songwriter-producer John Leventhal. Iā€™ve listened to it dozens of times since, and I still marvel at the emotion it stirs in me.
