Boss Introduces Katana Gen 3 Amps

Boss introduces the Katana Gen 3 Guitar amp lineup, featuring seven models with updated sounds and features.

Boss introduces the Katana Gen 3 Guitar Amplifier lineup, the third generation of the best-selling Katana amp series. Refreshed with updated sounds and features, the seven Katana Gen 3 models deliver evolved performance to take guitar ambitions to the next level. New Tube Logic enhancements enrich the core platform with even greater sound, feel, and response, including an expressive Pushed amp character that edge-of-breakup fans will love. The BOSS Tone Studio app has also been updated, making remote amp and effects editing workflows more intuitive than ever.

Katana Gen 3 features refinements to the five amp characters available in previous Katana models, including the iconic high-gain Brown type. The new Pushed character spotlights internal dynamic enhancements with the pleasing touch-responsive gain of a clean combo driven into harmonic saturation. All six amp characters include a selectable variation, providing 12 distinctive tones to support every musical style. Some models also include a unique newly developed Bloom circuit that revoices the amp’s feel and response.

Katana Gen 3 amps provide five onboard effect categories with essential selections from the historic BOSS library. Booster, Mod, FX, Delay, and Reverb sections offer enhanced sound quality, grab-and-go parameter controls, and three variations each for access to 15 unique effects.

The updated BOSS Tone Studio software for macOS and Windows allows users to customize the onboard effects from 60 different types and tweak deep options not available from the amp’s panel. When the optional Bluetooth® Audio MIDI Dual Adaptor is installed, it’s possible to stream audio from a mobile device and wirelessly edit sounds using the BTS editor app for iOS and Android.

Katana Gen 3 amps offer expansive audio connectivity options and powerful tools for modern performers. Tone Setting memories let users store and recall complete amp/effect setups, while rear-panel jacks support remote control with footswitches and an expression pedal. All models except the Katana-50 Gen 3 also support the GA-FC and GA-FC EX Foot Controllers for complete stage control.

This simple passive mod will boost your guitar’s sweet-spot tones.

Hello and welcome back to Mod Garage. In this column, we’ll be taking a closer look at the “mid boost and scoop mod” for electric guitars from longtime California-based tech Dan Torres, whose Torres Engineering seems to be closed, at least on the internet. This mod is in the same family with the Gibson Varitone, Bill Lawrence’s Q-Filter, the Gresco Tone Qube (said to be used by SRV), John “Dawk” Stillwells’ MTC (used by Ritchie Blackmore), the Yamaha Focus Switch, and the Epiphone Tone Expressor, as well as many others. So, while it’s just one of the many variations of tone-shaping mods, I chose the Torres because this one sounds best to me, which simply has to do with the part values he chose.

The two-in-one “sonic refractor” takes tremolo and wavefolding to radical new depths.

Pros: Huge range of usable sounds. Delicious distortion tones. Broadens your conception of what guitar can be.

Build quirks will turn some users off.

Know what a wavefolder does to your guitar signal? If you don’t, that’s okay. I didn’t either until I started messing around with the all-analog Cosmodio Instruments Gravity Well. It’s a dual-effect pedal with a tremolo and wavefolder, the latter more widely used in synthesis that , at a certain threshold, shifts or inverts the direction the wave is traveling—in essence, folding it upon itself. Used together here, they make up what Cosmodio calls a sonic refractor.
