Guild Launches the Kim Thayil Signature Polara

Guild Launches the Kim Thayil Signature Polara

As part of Guild's 70th anniversary and in collaboration with Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil, Guild Guitars introduces the all-new Thayil x Guild range of signature S-100 Polara models.

Hitting the streets in early September 2023, these guitars bring Thayilā€™s preferred specs and design elements to the famous Polara line, his instrument of choice for over 3 decades. "Weā€™ve been talking about doing this together for many years and are excited to finally bring these guitars to life,ā€ adds Guild President, Jonathan Thomas. ā€œIt's hard to look at a Polara and not think of Kim, his influence in music, and long connection to his Guilds.ā€

The lineup includes 2 models, the flagship USA Artist Edition S-100 Polara Kim Thayil as well as the Polara Kim Thayil, a production model that will street at $899. The USA Artist Edition is a limited run of 30 master-built guitars coming out of Guildā€™s California facility that feature an aged old-growth Honduran Mahogany body and neck, Guildā€™s 70's era enlarged headstock with slim neck shape, bound Indian Rosewood fingerboard with Mother of Pearl block inlays, Grover Original Rotomatics tuners, and custom Guild USA HB-1 Humbuckers hand wound by master pickup maker Jason Lollar. Additional features include a reproduction Guild/Mueller style bridge and compensated stopbar tailpiece, phase switch, Soundgarden "King Animal" truss rod cover, "Badmotorfinger" back cover hand-signed by Kim Thayil, and a white nitrocellulose gloss finish. Each guitar comes with a custom case and a numbered Certificate of Authenticity hand-signed by Kim Thayil, commemorating a timeless connection between artist and instrument.

The Polara Kim Thayil model brings Thayilā€™s signature design elements to a model that sits in Guildā€™s more accessible Newark St. Collection, including a Mahogany body and set neck with Guild's distinctive '70s large headstock with Chesterfield Inlay. Vintage correct HB-1 Humbuckers, complete with Alnico II magnets and phase switch, reproduce Kim's signature tones. A bound Rosewood fingerboard with Pearloid block inlays, a Tune-o-Matic bridge, Guild compensated stopbar tailpiece, multi-ply pickguard, Soundgarden "King Animal" truss rod cover and "Badmotorfinger" signature back cover, and gold hardware round out each signature instrument.

The compact offspring of the Roland SDE-3000 rack unit is simple, flexible, and capable of a few cool new tricks of its own.

Tonalities bridge analog and digital characteristics. Cool polyrhythmic textures and easy-to-access, more-common echo subdivisions. Useful panning and stereo-routing options.

Interactivity among controls can yield some chaos and difficult-to-duplicate sounds.

Though my affection for analog echo dwarfs my sentiments for digital delay, I donā€™t get doctrinaire about it. If the sound works, Iā€™ll use it. Boss digital delays have been instructive in this way to me before: I used a Boss DD-5 in a A/B amp rig with an Echoplex for a long time, blending the slur and stretch of the reverse echo with the hazy, wobbly tape delay. It was delicious, deep, and complex. And the DD-5 still lives here just in case I get the urge to revisit that place.

Guitar: The Green Snake

Reader T. Moody turned this Yamaha Pacifica body into a reptilian rocker.

With a few clicks on Reverb, a reptile-inspired shred machine was born.

With this guitar, I wanted to create a shadowbox-type vibe by adding something you could see inside. I have always loved the Yamaha Pacifica guitars because of the open pickup cavity and the light weight, so I purchased this body off Reverb (I think I am addicted to that website). I also wanted a color that was vivid and bold. The seller had already painted it neon yellow, so when I read in the description, ā€œYou can see this body from space,ā€ I immediately clicked the Buy It Now button. I also purchased the neck and pickups off of Reverb.
