PG's Chris Kies hung with Zack Feinberg, Ed Williams, and George Gekas to see how this Crescent City jam-band makes their moody alt-funk happen.
Purchased on eBay when he was 17, this nearly stock 1974 Guild Starfire IV remains lead guitarist Zach Feinberg's No. 1 for versatility and vibe.
For the past two years, Feinberg carries a PRS S2 Starla when he wants something a bit brighter with a Bigsby. He strings both guitars with a set of DR Strings .011s.
Inspired by Gary Clark Jr., Feinberg retired his Fender Super Reverb and went with a Fender Vibro-King. The original speakers have been swapped out and the combo now houses three Weber Ferromax 10F150Ts.
Feinbergâs pedalboard appears to be thrown together, but when it counts, it gets the job done. The signal starts with an Ernie Ball volume pedal with the tuner-out line hitting the Boss TU-3 Tuner. From there the signal flows to a Fulltone Clyde Wah, a Zendrive by Hermida Audio, a Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive Mod, a Xotic SP Compressor, and a pair of Strymon pedals (Timeline and Flint). A Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus supplies the juice and everything rests on a Pedaltrain board.
Ed Williams plays a Fessenden pedal steel guitar with five foot pedals, five knee levers, and two pickups for nearly unlimited sonic madness.
He runs the steel into a Mesa/Boogie Lonestar combo.
The steel plugs into a TC Electronic Nova Delay, a Dunlop Cry Baby Wah, a Dunlop volume pedal with the tuner out running to a Boss TU-3 tuner.
The signal then hits a ZVEX Box of Rock that runs into the amp.
A TC Electronic Hall of Fame Reverb lives on top of the Lonestar and runs into the ampâs effects loop.
Bassist George Gekas spends most of the night playing his Warwick Corvette Standard 5-string made of bubinga and strung with DR High Beams. The Warwick is stock other than the neck, which needed to be replaced after a nasty spill.
For a warmer acoustic sound, Gekas goes with his DâAngelico EX-Bass in black with flatwound strings.
He runs both his basses into an Eden WT800 World Tour and a SVT 8x10 cab.
Gekas plugs his hardwired bass into an MXR Bass Octave Deluxe, MXR Bass Compressor, Korg Tuner, and a Radial Bassbone DD. All his pedals live on a Pedaltrain JR board with a Pedaltrain Powertrain 1250 supplying all the voltage.
