The hollowbody sunburst used to be a “boring Cort Yorktown jazz box,” according to Peter-Eric Verstegen. “For this project, I got some Gretsch Dynasonics from a 6120, a Bigsby B6 and a 6-position Varitone,” he shares. “To replace humbuckers with Dynasonics is a challenge because the holes of the humbucker do not fit (at all) a Dynasonic. Therefore, I designed some humbucker-to-Dynasonic plates and covered them with alligator skin tolex.

He also redesigned the scratchplate, logo and trussrod cover, using printed aluminum on the latter. The scratchplate and logo are inspired by Harley. “For me, it is the ultimate combination of Gretsch and Gibson—sounds aggressive with my Brunetti!”

Throughout the year we collect stories and photos of guitar-mod projects created by you, our beloved readers. Some of these guitars are so inspiring we’re compelled to share them with everyone in this annual Hot Rod issue. As always, you don’t disappoint. And by using fetching racecar flame designs, several readers even revealed their devotion to the original “hot rod” culture!

We couldn’t fit all of your mod submissions here, but look for more stories in our “Hot-Rod Gallery – Reader’s Edition” online next month.
