Rig Rundown: JD McPherson

The retro roots-rocker shows how he gets yesteryear tones with new beauties from Fender, TK Smith, and Texotica.

McPherson rocks a 40-watt Texotica Presidio 15 with a 15” Weber Ferromax speaker. The Presidio is a 6L6-powered amp that comes across as a souped-up ’50s Fender Tweed Pro. Also on hand is a Quilter MicroPro Mach 2 which serves as a backup or when McPherson can’t bring along the Presidio.

Marshall mass in miniature.

Many inspiring and realistic big-Marshall tones. Cool variation in amp, cab, and room models.

Authentic as it sounds, it’s hard to replace the visceral experience of a big, bad stack.

In terms of sounding satisfying on playback, Universal Audio’s UAFX Lion ’68 is at the leading edge, and a convenient path to big-Marshall-isms with minimum hassle and mega convenience.
