Wampler Pedals Releases the Faux Tape Echo V2, Pinnacle Deluxe V2, and Mini Ego Compressor
A pair of updated models and a smaller version of the company's classic compressor.
Martinsville, IN (November 8, 2016) -- Brian Wampler has created the next stage in the evolution of the Faux Tape Echo. While keeping the original analog dry path, the Faux Tape Echo v2 provides up to 600ms of clean, tape-style delay with realistic modulation and note decay. There is more time on tap, with the Faux Tape Echo capable of up to about 800ms total of delay time, but with light grit on the delay signal past 600ms because of pushing the delay chip to its absolute maximum. V2 has done away with the on/off switch for the modulation and substituted with two streamlined controls for Rate and depth to control the lush modulation, where turning each fully counterclockwise will add no effect to the delay signal. The repeats and delax mix are still present in this newest version, allowing the delay signal to be integrated on top of the analog dry path seamlessly for the desired blend of delay without losing your base tone and the warmth it provides. The repeats control ranges from one repeat fully counterclockwise to self-oscillation past 3pm, with the oscillation being tamed via the tone knob. The tone knob affects only the delay signal, not the analog signal at all, allowing the player to dial in very warm and ambient-style repeats, or brighter and more percussive repeats rolling the knob clockwise The delay knob dictates the delay time, which is also controllable with the built-in tap tempo switch. This newest version goes a step further and provides four subdivisions to choose from: 1/4 note, 1/8th, dotted 1/8th and triplet, which are based on your tap tempo.

Brian Wampler designed the original Pinnacle Standard and Deluxe with the “Brown Sound” in mind. With the new Pinnacle Deluxe v2, Brian wanted to break outside of the “Brown Box” and provide a versatile distortion for any players needs (though retaining what made the Pinnacle special to begin with). Brian’s way of enhancing the control of his best selling distortion pedal came by providing a 3-band EQ (bass, mids, treble) to fine-tune the EQ to match the guitar and amp the player is using. The modern/vintage switch alters the EQ frequencies, with modern having a edgier, more aggressive crunch that focuses on the highs and lows. The vintage setting is warmer with fatter mid frequency response that really fills out the tone for the classic rock lovers. The gain/boost switch takes the saturation up to the next level, with the boost providing a substantial increase in gain, similar to an amp screaming on 10. Additionally, there is a new SAG switch on the side, which helps control the amount of compression and saggy crunch to tighten up the gain with high-output pickups. The Pinnacle Deluxe also comes with an independent boost switch which is controlled via the boost knob. Based on a popular green pedal, it gives an extra option of boosting the pre-gain with a mid-centered overdrive that is designed to fatten up the gain and cut through the mix.
Features:
- Built in the U.S.A.
- High grade components picked for their superior sound and response
- Relay true bypass with soft switch
- Top mounted input and output jacks
- Battery connection and 9v power jack, capable of running up to 18v
- Power draw: between 19mA (9v) and 23mA (18v)
- High gain, crunchy and dynamic pedal with an extremely tweakable EQ
- Valuable pre-gain boost that works separately from the main circuit

Wampler Pedals, creators of the original Ego Compressor TM , have received countless requests from players for a mini version of the pedal for saving space on cramped boards or ease of use on fly rigs. Brian’s solution comes in the form of the Mini Ego Compressor. The Mini Ego still showcases the same functionality and tone as its larger counterpart, having control over the output level and sustain, along with the blend knob for blending in the compressed signal with the clean signal. The attack and tone knobs have been converted to 2-way switches, with each selection on the switch correlating with popular settings based on the full size Ego Compressor. Engaging the tone switch adds presence to the compressed signal, giving a bit more clarity that can be lost with compression. The attack switch features a Soft attack and a hard attack mode. Soft attack makes the compressor not clamp on the signal as quickly, but provides added sustain as the note decays. The hard attack makes the compressor engage quicker, clamping down on the note closer to the initial attacked of the note for a more classic “pop and squish” that is known for funk and country playing.
Features:
- Built in the U.S.A
- High grade components picked for their superior sound and response
- Completely True-bypass
- 9v power jack with the ability to run up to 18v (center negative barrel plug only)
- Power draw: between 14mA (9v) and 22mA (18v)
- Five controls – volume, sustain, blend, tone and attack
- Stacks well with overdrives
- Mini format (1.5″ x 3.5″ x 1.5″ excluding knobs and switches)
- 5-year warranty
MSPR $179.79 USD

From his first listen, Brendon Small has been a lifetime devotee and thrash-metal expert, so we invited him to help us break down what makes Slayer so great.
Slayer guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman formed the original searing 6-string front line of the most brutal band in the land. Together, they created an aggressive mood of malcontent with high-velocity thrash riffs and screeching solos that’ll slice your speaker cones. The only way to create a band more brutal than Slayer would be to animate them, and that’s exactly what Metalocalypse (and Home Movies) creator Brendon Small did.
From his first listen, Small has been a lifetime devotee and thrash-metal expert, so we invited him to help us break down what makes Slayer so great. Together, we dissect King and Hanneman’s guitar styles and list their angriest, most brutal songs, as well as those that create a mood of general horribleness.

The in-demand New York-based musician and singer shares how she became one of the music industry’s buzziest bass players.
At 26, Blu DeTiger is the youngest musician ever to have a signature Fender bass guitar. The Fender Limited Player Plus x Blu DeTiger Jazz Bass, announced in September, pays tribute to the bassist and singer’s far-reaching impact and cultural sway. She’s played with Caroline Polachek, Bleachers, FLETCHER, Olivia Rodrigo, and more, and released her own LP in March 2024. In 2023, Forbes feature her on their top 30 Under 30 list of musicians. So how did DeTiger work her way to the top?
DeTiger opens up on this episode of Wong Notes about her career so far, which started at a School of Rock camp at age seven. That’s where she started performing and learning to gig with others—she played at CBGB’s before she turned 10. DeTiger took workshops with Victor Wooten at Berklee followed and studied under Steven Wolf, but years of DJing around New York City, which hammered in the hottest basslines in funk and disco, also imprinted on her style. (Larry Graham is DeTiger’s slap-bass hero.)
DeTiger and Wong dish on the ups and downs of touring and session life, collaborating with pop artists to make “timeless” pop songs, and how to get gigs. DeTiger’s advice? “You gotta be a good hang.”
