Gibson Announces Min-ETune Aftermarket Robot Tuning System

Gibson Announces Min-ETune Aftermarket Robot Tuning System

Min-ETune is a small, compact, battery-powered tuning unit that sits on the back of the headstock.

Nashville, TN (November 28, 2012) -- Five years after introducing the Robot Les Paul, Gibson has announced an add-on product to potentially add the technology to any guitar. It appears that the Min-ETune is currently only being offered as an upgrade to a wide range of Gibson's offerings, and not yet as a standalone product. Here's what Gibson has to say about the technology:

Min-ETune is a small compact battery powered tuning unit that sits on the back of the guitar — a mighty enhancement to an already great instrument. No need for screws, wiring or routing, in fact the system is hardly visible from the front of the guitar. You can still adjust the tuning pegs manually or turn on the Min-ETune to choose from 12 popular tunings or program 6 of your own.

A guitar with Min-ETune looks the same, feels the same, plays the same and rocks the same - it’s just always in tune. Adjust to other instruments' imperfect tuning with Reference Tuning and keep that harmony going. Perfect for home, studio and gigging: The internal lithium battery lasts for 80 to 100 tunings on just one charge. Rock longer with the fast and accurate Min-ETune, tuning your guitar in just 3 seconds and 1 strum.

Submarine Pickups boss Pete Roe at his workstation.

Single-coils and humbuckers aren’t the only game in town anymore. From hybrid to hexaphonic, Joe Naylor, Pete Roe, and Chris Mills are thinking outside the bobbin to bring guitarists new sonic possibilities.

Electric guitar pickups weren’t necessarily supposed to turn out the way they did. We know the dominant models of single-coils and humbuckers—from P-90s to PAFs—as the natural and correct forms of the technology. But the history of the 6-string pickup tells a different story. They were mostly experiments gone right, executed with whatever materials were cheapest and closest at hand. Wartime embargos had as much influence on the development of the electric guitar pickup as did any ideas of function, tone, or sonic quality—maybe more so.
