His oldest guitar on this run was his longtime friend—a 1976 Fender Strat that has been modded to have American Special single-coils. In an interview he did with PG in 2011, he explained how his current No. 1 influenced the swap: The Sunburst has a [S-1] pushbutton for out-of-phase stuff and its hardware is just killer. That became my main guitar for playing live, and that’s how I ended up choosing those pickups for the ’76, too.”
