PG’s Perry Bean hung with the Pokey LaFarge crew when they played in Nashville on their summer tour. LaFarge, guitarist Adam Hoskins, and bassist Joey Glynn spilled the beans on their old-timey tone tools.
Pokey LaFarge plays a 1946 Epiphone Spartan that sports a Kent Armstrong pickup and is strung with D’Addario XL Half Rounds (.013–.056).
Simplicity is key in LaFarge’s rig. His lone amp is this Magnatone Twilighter. It’s a 22-watt combo that’s designed around a pair of 6V6 tubes.
The minimalist ethos extends to LaFarge’s pedalboard as well. At his feet sits a Pedaltrain Metro 20 loaded with a Radial ToneBone PZ-Pre acoustic preamp. His only other “effect” is a D’Addario Chromatic Tuner.
Adam Hoskins plays this 1939 Gibson L-12 with a K&K piezo pickup. He strings it up with D’Addario EFT17 Flat Top Phosphor Bronze strings (.013–.056).
This 1962 Guild Starfire II is what Hoskins reaches for when it’s time to go electric. On this guitar, he uses D’Addario EXL115 strings (.011–.049).
All of Hoskins’ electric tones come from his guitar, his amp, and his hands—no pedals needed. Here’s his tweed Fender Blues Jr. that he puts into action every night.
Joey Glynn plays an Engelhardt double bass loaded with an Underwood pickup and strung up with Pirastro Slap strings.
Glynn runs his bass through a 12” Markbass combo amp along with an additional 12” Markbass extension cab.
To keep things in tune, Glynn clips a D’Addario NS Micro Tuner on the bridge of his bass.
