Doc Watson’s first Gallagher, “Ol’hoss,” was presented to him in 1968. A G-50 model with a cracked side, it was never intended for sale, but Doc fell in love with it. It’s been in the Country Music Hall of Fame since 1975, and recently returned to the Gallagher factory for a tune-up. Stephen Gallagher reports that after a new set of strings it was in perfect playing condition. The back and sides are Honduras mahogany with ivoroid binding; top is Sitka spruce; the neck is mahogany with rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Ol’hoss is serial number 68001, the first guitar built at the Gallagher factory in 1968. Grandpa Jones got the last Gallagher made in 1968.
