GALLERY: Experience Hendrix 2014

Highlights from today’s brightest stars as they celebrate a guitar forefather.

This marks the eighth year for the Experience Hendrix tour, which launched in Dallas on March 11, 2014, and travels to more than 20 cities through mid-April. The tour stopped at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey, on March 25, 2014.

More than 40 years after his death, Jimi Hendrix’s music lives on and continues to influence musicians of all flavors. The Experience Hendrix Tour is just one example of how some of today’s talented players continue to pass the torch of the almighty mystical muse and guitar great. This year’s lineup includes Eric Johnson, Dweezil Zappa, Eric Gales, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Buddy Guy, and bassist Billy Cox—the last surviving member of both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys. Here’s a look at the March 25, 2014, show the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey. Spoiler Alert: Everyone played Fender Strats, although Jonny Lang slipped in his Tele for a song or two.

The guitar has been a major factor in so many styles of music over the last 70 years, and any experienced musician can tell you that playing any one of those styles with authenticity takes countless hours of dedication. As we learn the instrument, we seek out music that we find inspiring to help guide us toward our voice. The legends we all know in the guitar pantheon have inspired millions of players. In my musical journey over the years, I’ve always been thrilled to discover unique musicians who never attained the same recognition as their more famous counterparts. With so much music at our disposal these days, I thought this group of guitarists deserved a little more spotlight. The inspiration and knowledge they have provided me were paramount in my development, and I wouldn’t be the player I am without them.
