Jonny Lang did a quick post-soundcheck hang with Premier Guitar at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. The Grammy winner has upgraded a few things in his rig since we last saw him, but his Fender Custom Shop Tele is never out of arm’s reach.
Lang travels light with just three guitars, switching whenever the song calls for a new, distinct voice. A longtime Tele man, Jonny has put some serious miles on this 2003 Fender Custom Shop Thinline Tele. This one-of-a-kind Tele is loaded with two Bill Lawrence humbuckers and a Duncan P-90 in the middle position. He uses D’Addario EXL 110+ (.0105–.048) strings.
On his new album, Signs, Lang spent a good deal of time on his 2000-ish Gibson 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue.
For acoustics, Lang goes with his 2000 Martin J-40 that’s strung with D’Addario EJ17 Phosphor Bronze strings. This Martin has had the top cracked from some serious touring, but it still sings.
Even on flight dates, Lang travels with his modified Fender ’65 Deluxe Reverb reissue, switching between the channels to add or subtract grit. Lang also uses a second backline Fender ’65 Deluxe to augment his tone.
Lang’s pedals rest on his illuminated Trailer Trash pedalboard. The signal starts with a Monster Cable running into a JAM Pedals Wah, then into a Boss TU-3 tuner. From there, it hits a 3 Monkeys Looper which diverts the signal to a Visual Sound V2 Route 808, Prescription Electronics Clean Octave Blend, Fulltone Ultimate Octave, JAM Pedals Tube Dreamer, Whirlwind The Bomb boost, and a Boss AW-3 Dynamic Wah. A Whirlwind selector allows Lang to switch between his amp channels.
