D’Angelico Guitars Partners with D’Addario to Release Electrozinc Strings

Electrozinc marks the return of the partnership between two legendary brands.

New York, NY (February 16, 2017) -- At the 2017 NAMM show, D’Angelico Guitars will launch their all-new electric guitar strings: D’Angelico Electrozinc. Co-designed and engineered by D’Addario, Electrozinc marks the return of the partnership between these two legendary brands.

The story of the string begins more than 75 years ago. In 1938, John D’Angelico was already a living legend known for his signature archtop guitars, while John D’Addario was a young kid trying to expand the family string business. Their chance meeting would result in the invention of the world’s first modern round wound electric guitar string, the zinc-plated Bethanized™ Steel string. Its sound was unrivaled in fullness, volume, and brightness. Its tone would be featured on some of the greatest records of all time. But the closing of the Bethlehem Steel plant in the ‘60s put an abrupt end to its production, leaving its sound unmatched for over half a century. Until now.

Today, D’Angelico and D’Addario have re-forged their storied partnership. Combining modern innovation with John D’Addario’s original designs, D’Angelico’s Electrozinc string is the truest tribute to Bethanized™ Steel since the original. And D’Addario’s EXP technology coats every string to maintain its classic tone even longer. Electrozinc will be available in six gauge variations, suiting players from all traditions—from hard rock to swinging jazz:

  • Electrozinc 9s: 09-11-16-24-32-42
  • Electrozinc 10s: 10-13-17-26-36-46
  • Electrozinc 11s: 11-14-18-28-38-49
  • Electrozinc Jazz 10s: 10-14-23w-30-39-47
  • Electrozinc Jazz 12s: 12-16-24w-32-42-52
  • Electrozinc Jazz 13s: 13-17-26w-36-46-56

It’s another legendary string, inspired by the one that started it all. Coming 2017 to authorized D’Angelico dealers. Included is a promotional video featuring D’Addario CEO Jim D’Addario, D’Angelico CEO and President Brenden Cohen and D’Angelico Vice President of International Sales Steve Pisani.

After 26 years, the seminal noisy rockers return to the studio to create Rack, a master class of pummeling, machine-like grooves, raving vocals, and knotty, dissonant, and incisive guitar mayhem.

The last time the Jesus Lizard released an album, the world was different. The year was 1998: Most people counted themselves lucky to have a cell phone, Seinfeld finished its final season, Total Request Live was just hitting MTV, and among the year’s No. 1 albums were Dave Matthews Band’s Before These Crowded Streets, Beastie Boys’ Hello Nasty, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Korn’s Follow the Leader, and the Armageddonsoundtrack. These were the early days of mp3 culture—Napster didn’t come along until 1999—so if you wanted to hear those albums, you’d have to go to the store and buy a copy.

Though it uses two EL84’s to generate 15 watts, the newest David Grissom-signature amp has as much back-panel Fender body as AC15 bite.

A great-sounding, flexible reimagining of a 15-watt, EL84 template.

No effects loop. Balancing boost and non-boosted volumes can be tricky.

Amp Head: $1,199 street.
1x12 Speaker Cabinet: $499 street.

The individuals behind the initials “PRS” and “DGT” have, over the last two decades, very nearly become their own little gear empire. The “DG” is, of course, acclaimed Texas guitar slinger David Grissom. The other fellow founded a little guitar and amplifier company in Maryland you may have heard of. (And he’s also a PG columnist.)
