PG’s John Bohlinger caught Warpaint's Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman (above) during a seemingly never-ending tour. The childhood pals walked us through their funky, vintage, and sometimes homemade gear before their gig at Nashville’s 3rd and Lindsley.
Emily Kokal’s No. #1 is a mostly stock 1966 Fender Jaguar with a nicely yellowed factory finish and big block inlays. The stock bridge has been upgraded to a Mastery.
As a backup, the entire band shares this new Fender Mustang 90 that’s loaded with P-90 pickups. (Premier Guitar and Fender teamed up to giveaway a similar instrument—a standard Mustang—enter to win here.)
Kokal plugs into a Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus 120 to give her a clean platform for her pedals.
After losing her pedalboad while on tour in Iceland, and then quickly crafting together a replacement board, Kokal took the best of both of those setups for her current cache of stomps. The signal starts with a Boss TU-2 tuner and then goes into an Ibanez TS808DX Tube Screamer Overdrive Pro Deluxe, Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Nano, TC Electronic Corona, Electro-Harmonix Neo Clone Nano, Strymon El Capistan, and a Boss DD-7. A Voodoo Lab Pedal Power sits underneath the board.
One of Theresa Wayman’s most prized instruments is a bass made for her by the father of Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa. The neck, tuners, bridge, and pickup came from some ’60s-era Fender P basses. The source of the body remains a mystery. Wayman keeps it strung up with flatwounds.
For nearly a decade, Wayman has played this stock 1966 Fender Mustang. She gravitated toward this particular model because of the Mustang’s small neck and low action.
Wayman is loyal to her Vox AC30 CC2. Wayman likes the CC2 for the amp’s top boost, ’verb, and tremolo.
Wayman plugs her Mustang into her Boss TU-2 tuner. From there, it hits her JHS Sweet Tea Overdrive, JHS Prestige buffered boost, Electro-Harmonix Pitch Fork and an EHX Small Stone Nano. Next is an EarthQuaker Devices Dispatch Master, Catalinbread Adineko, TC Electronic Hall of Fame Reverb, and a Boss DD-5 Digital Delay which sends the signal back to the amp.
