On our season two finale, the country legend details his lead-guitar tricks on one of his biggest hits.
Get out the Kleenex, hankies, or whatever you use to wipe away your tears: It’s the last episode of this season of Shred With Shifty, a media event more consequential and profound than the finales of White Lotus and Severance combined. But there’ll be some tears of joy, too, because on this season two closer, Chris Shiflett talks with one of country music’s greatest players: Vince Gill.
Gill’s illustrious solo career speaks for itself, and he’s played with everyone from Reba McEntire and Patty Loveless to Ricky Skaggs and Dolly Parton. He even replaced Glenn Frey in the Eagles after Frey’s death in 2017. His singing prowess is matched by his grace and precision on the fretboard, skills which are on display on the melodic solo for “One More Last Chance.” He used the same blackguard 1953 FenderTelecaster that you see in this interview to record the lead, although he might not play the solo the exact way he did back in 1992.

NASHVILLE, TN – Pablo Picasso had his famous Blue Guitar. Now, so does Brad Paisley, courtesy of the Fender Custom Shop. Last Wednesday, Paisley unveiled his latest signature model, the “Lost Paisley” Telecaster, at a Q&A session and mini concert at Fender’s East Nashville headquarters. The instrument is an exacting reproduction of Paisley’s own, rare 1967 Tele in a stunning, practically glowing, blue-flower paisley finish, with custom-wound Seymour Duncan pickups and a bender that can be set to the B string or, as Paisley prefers, the G string. Spoiler: It looks and sounds badass, even with Paisley playing through a Fender Champ, which you’ll experience when you watch our video. The street price for this limited edition instrument is $7,000.
Of course, PG’s John Bohlinger and our video team of Chris Kies and Perry Bean were at the unveiling, and Bohlinger and Paisley went deep into the new instrument’s back story. As Paisley tells it, after a sheet of the rarely used blue paisley paper that Fender briefly employed for a guitar finish in 1968 turned up in an old ammo box from the Vietnam era, which sounds like a saga in itself, it fell into the hands of guitar historian Alan Cross, who brought it to Paisley’s attention.

Fender briefly produced both red and blue paisley instruments to capture the vibe of the Summer of Love. Compared to the red, which faded to the now famed Fender “pink paisley” hue, the original blue-paisley-finish models are quite rare. Hence the “lost,” in Lost Paisley. Cross took the paper to Paisley, who almost immediately got to work, applying it to the ’67 Tele he had modded for a G-bender by Joe Glaser shortly after Paisley arrived in Nashville in the mid-1990s.
“Once I put the original paper on this guy right here,“ he said, referring to his original instrument, “this became my favorite guitar.” As his affinity for the look and feel of the instrument continued to grow, Paisley figured he’d take it to Fender’s Custom Shop, which had earlier developed his pink paisley signature (based on his ‘68) and his road-worn Tele models.

The Lost Paisley model has a lightweight body, crafted from a unique combination of alder, paulownia, and spruce. The finish is relic’d, to match Paisley’s axe, with a colorful, metallic burst. It has a custom ’60s oval C-shape maple neck with a round-laminated maple fretboard. Under the hood, the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Hand-Wound Lost Paisley pickups provide warmth, clarity, and tonal balance, which was audible at the unveiling, and the Glaser “G” Bender system allows for fluid, pedal-steel-like bends. In addition to its late-’60s appointments, the instrument is bundled with custom accessories, including a vintage-style case, period-correct Fender strap, and certificate of authenticity. At one point while he played, Paisley had to check to be sure he was picking the Custom Shop model rather than his original. “I literally just picked this guitar up for the first time, and it feels just like I’m playing my original,” he noted.
The hardest aspect of reverse engineering the Lost Telecast was recreating the paper for the finish. “Now, between [Nashville tech to the stars] Joe Glaser and [noted guitar collector and dealer, and former Paisley guitar tech] Zac Childs, we know more about adhesive paper than I ever went down that ramp before. It’s literally aluminum foil with a paper backing, and then there's an embossed paisley pattern on it. Getting the color right maybe was the hardest thing. We would change one number in the color code for one of the shades of this and it would look completely wrong.
When he finished his ’67 with the blue paisley paper from the ammo case, “I did the bursting myself to make it look like I thought it should. And so when we did this new version, I’m like, we gotta make sure that this plastic fades and oxidizes or whatever it is. I just love the way these colors work together. In the end, it’s showbiz. What looks cool on stage? And every from the size of the burst and the way that the paint interacts and the way that it fades and the relic’ing of the paper and the cracks all play into that. Then, it’s all about feel, and this guitar looks and plays great. The Custom Shop nailed it!”
The country artist and session weapon packed a range of acoustics for some recent studio time.
Charlie Worsham was just wrapping up some tracking down at Sony Studios in Nashville when PG’s John Bohlinger caught up with him for a look at what tools he packs for a recording gig. Worsham had with him some of his most treasured acoustics, electrics, mandolins, banjos, and more, plus a collection of primo picks for all applications. Check out the highlights below.
This 1963 Martin D-28, gifted to him from his parents, was Worsham’s first serious vintage guitar. Around 12 years ago, he took it into a shop for a refret, and after a freak in-store accident left it in pieces, Worsham accepted a check for the guitar’s value, and walked away.
A while later, he noticed it hanging on the wall of the same store—reassembled and fit for service again. Worsham couldn’t help himself; he bought it back, making it “the guitar so nice, [he] acquired it twice.”
He runs it with D’Addario XS strings and likes bluegrass gauges: mediums for the E, A, and D strings, and lights for the G, B, and high E strings. It’s kitted out with an LR Baggs HiFi pickup. And the scratches around the soundhole and pickguard? Those came courtesy of John Osborne’s heavy picking hand.
Check, Please
Worsham reckons he’s probably played this treasured Gibson J-50 on more records than any other guitar he owns. After he took the check from the busted Martin D-28, he used it to buy this one.
Family Jewel
This Parker mando used to belong to John Osborne, Worsham’s former bandmate. Worsham was always borrowing this mandolin, so when Osborne decided to sell it, Worsham picked it up to keep it in the family.
Burkett from ’Bama
This mini Burkett was built by luthier James Burkett in Alabama. Its nut is equivalent to a capo on the third fret of a regular acoustic.

Worsham took Tom Bukovac’s wisdom and got himself a Fender Princeton Reverb, which he still loves, and he runs it alongside a Nashville Amp Works clone of a golden-era tweed Fender Deluxe.

At his feet, Worsham runs a pedalboard with a Sonic Research ST-300 tuner, Browne Amplification Protein, Mythos Mjolnir, Guyatone ST2, Electro-Harmonix Canyon, Neunaber Immerse, Strymon El Capistan, and Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl HiFi.

The Austin-based guitarist sticks with a tried-and-true combo of American guitars and British amps.
If you’ve been on the path of this spring’s Rhett Schull/Zach Person tour, you’ve been treated to one of the coolest rock ’n’ roll double bills criss-crossing North America this year. Person, who is based in Austin, put out his second full-length record, Let’s Get Loud, in March 2024, and it was packed with alt-, blues-, and psychedelic-rock anthems built around his take-no-prisoners playing.
This year, Person is road-doggin’ it around the United States as a two-piece unit with just a drummer, and PG’s Chris Kies caught up with him before he and Shull played the Eastside Bowl in Madison, Tennessee, to see what goods Person is bringing for this spring’s shows.
This Gibson Jimi Hendrix 1967 Custom SG came from Gibson’s custom shop, and for Person, an SG with humbuckers is a hard combination to beat. He removed the Maestro trem system and had a tailpiece installed for tuning stability on the road, and he subjected the neck humbucker to a “Jimmy Page mod,” which entails removing the pole pieces to get closer to single-coil tones. This SG stays in standard tuning, with Ernie Ball or D’Addario strings (usually .010–.046s). Person digs Dunlop Flow Grip .88 mm picks.
Brown Sound
Person brought this 1967 Gibson SG Special back to life with a list of modifications and upgrades, including new pickups and a refinish, but its wood, neck shape, and original frets all made it worth it to him. The neck shape is narrow but chunky in Person’s hands, landing somewhere near the feel of Tyler Bryant’s 1962 Stratocaster. The pickups now are OX4 P-90s, and like the Custom, this one’s had its Maestro system amputated.
Jeannie Comes Alive
One Thanksgiving at his in-laws’ home in Dallas, Person mentioned how badly he wanted a Gibson LG-2 acoustic. As it happened, his father-in-law suspected his mother had one, which had been relegated to storage in a shed. Person and his wife’s father ventured through rain to dig it out, and sure enough, a very beat up LG-1 was withering away in its case. No local techs in Austin thought it was worth saving, except for Elaine Filion, who was used to taking on bigger restoration projects. Filion succeeded, taking the top off and installing an X-bracing system to turn the LG-1 into an LG-2-style guitar. Now, it’s got an L.R. Baggs pickup and bears the nameplate “Jeannie” on its headstock to commemorate his wife’s grandma, the original owner. Jeannie usually stays home, but Person brought her out specially for the Rundown.
Marshall Muscle
This Marshall JTM45 MkII is Person’s usual go-to. It runs just at breakup volume and gets pushed with some variation of a Pro Co RAT, his favorite dirt box.
Supro Signature
This Super Black Magick Reverb, Tyler Bryant’s signature, is along for the ride as a backup to the Marshall.
Zach Person’s Pedalboard
Person has done tours with just an overdrive pedal and nothing else, so by comparison, this two-tiered Vertex board is luxurious. Still, it’s compact and carries all he needs at the moment. The JHS Pack Rat is the core sound, set fairly heavy and dirty. The rest includes a Boss TU-3, EarthQuaker Devices Double Hoof, Vox Clyde McCoy wah, Boss BF-2, DigiTech Drop, Strymon El Capistan, and an Interstellar Audio Machines Marsling Octafuzzdrive. A TC Helicon Mic Mechanic rides along as a vocal effect so Person can keep control over his voice from night to night.
