Chasing classic tones with new tech has kept major tube-first amp companies and designers in the game. Here’s how they’ve done it.
Darren Monroe had been working with musical instrument retail giant Sweetwater for 18 years when he was promoted to senior amps and effects buyer in 2019. The company’s senior category manager for those products had seen a lot of change in gear up to that point, but a major shift from that year has stuck with him: It’s when Fender’s Tone Master series launched. Legacy tube amp manufacturers had produced digital amps before, but Monroe says the Tone Master was different.
What set the series apart from previous digital attempts by household tube amp brands? For Monroe, it’s simple: They were really good, better than previous digital releases from Fender. “They were pro-level amps,” says Monroe. “They sounded good, and they sound good still, plus they’re super light. It feels like that was somewhat of a sea change at that point.”
For Monroe and many others, the Tone Master marked a new frontier in digital amplification. While digital-only manufacturers like Kemper, Fractal, Neural, and Line 6 had produced excellent, endlessly versatile amp tools over the years, tube-first makers seemed to struggle to put out digital amplifiers that could go toe-to-toe with their valve offerings in most settings. The Tone Master declared that Fender wasn’t just a heritage nameplate. They would be part of the next generation of guitar amplification.

To keep pace with the explosion of popularity in lightweight, utilitarian digital modeling and profiling technology, many tube amp builders—including Fender, Blackstar, Marshall, Vox, Mesa/Boogie, Peavey, and others—have pivoted toward next-gen offerings that bloggers, critics, and players consider on par with their all-valve ancestors, with varying degrees of adaptability for the modern guitarist. The changes across the industry evince a different approach not just to amplification, but perhaps to the entire practice of playing guitar.

Processing Power’s New Hour
Fender’s Tone Master marked the company’s biggest non-tube splash, but the California-based brand has been involved with modeling since the early 2000s. The Fender Cyber-Twin, released in January 2001, was their first swing at integrating digital modeling technology with tube circuits. The 135-watt 2x12 combo came with 250 digital signal processing (DSP) amp presets and 42 effects presets, all driven by two 12AX7 preamp tubes.
To analog purists, mixing the two technologies within the Cyber-Twin might have been heresy, but Justin Norvell, executive vice president of Fender products, says it’s not so radical. “There’s a legacy in our tube amps, but tubes were the tech of the time going back to 1946,” he says. “At the end of the day, these are tools, and getting the most utilitarian or usable tools for players is what we’re all about.”
Norvell says the most significant game-changer in digital production has been the increase in processing power. That leap has taken modeling from a “convenience play” that packed many sounds into one package to an audio technology that can rival tube amplifiers. “We’ve really gotten to a point where there isn’t that much difference,” says Norvell. In the early days, modeling was full of “compromises” and approximations of certain sounds. Now, software and processing firepower advances mean those sounds can be dialed in to be identical to those of tube amps.

On that note, the Tone Master represents a new-school approach to modeling: Rather than trying to pack tons of different sounds into one amp, Norvell says they opted to simplify. “Instead of giving in to that desire to take a quad-core processing amplifier and make it do 100 things, it’s like, ‘Let’s take all that processing power and make it do all of the subtleties and nuances of the one thing perfectly,’” he says. “That would not have been possible several years ago.”
Given Fender’s history of dynamic, responsive, and sensitive amplification, that goal required a lot of tweaking. Sometimes, says Norvell, they could see a visual on a screen indicating that a tone has been replicated. Other times, the deciding factors were listening tests, and the ears of the testers. “It’s a real mix of art and science,” says Norvell.

He says Fender’s and other long-time amp producers’ situations are unique in that when designing their digital offerings, engineers can go next door and consult the person who designed the Princeton or Deluxe Reverb reissues. Norvell says this makes for a more contextualized and less abstract approach to sound engineering. “It’s more than just taking some oscilloscope measurements of an amp and making a model of it,” he says. “It’s really intrinsically understanding that electronic ecosystem.”
The interplay between past and present has been key to Fender’s digital development. “The makeup of a digital amp is completely different as to the way that it comes together,” says Norvell. He says it’s “markedly” more work to produce a digital amp than an all-tube, requiring more people, collaboration, and software-to-hardware matching.
Norvell says that the makeup of Fender’s staff has changed to fit the development of digital technologies. Now, it’s not only analog engineers working on their circuits, cabinets, and speakers. “There are software engineers, DSP engineers—all of these different things that have completely recast the way our product and research and development departments look, and what they do,” says Norvell.

Fender’s emphasis at the moment is on modeling rather than profiling, which Norvell says is “more akin to taking a snapshot of something,” while modeling has discrete pieces interacting and behaving more similarly to an analog circuit. Before the Tone Master line, Fender’s Mustang amp series, starting at $159 street, offered their modeling at an entry-level price point. The Tone Master line starts at $899 street for the Princeton Reverb and peaks at $1,249 street for the Tone Master Super Reverb.
From Marshall to Blackstar
Ian Robinson admits that when the first digital amps started hitting the market in the mid-1990s, he was cynical. Robinson, an electrical engineer, was then working at Marshall as their research and development manager/chief design engineer. But Robinson’s Marshall colleague and future Blackstar cofounder Bruce Keir, a brilliant engineer who would become Blackstar’s technical director until his death in 2021, wasn’t as skeptical. Keir was an engineer “in the purest sense,” says Robinson, which meant he was agnostic in terms of what technology he used, as long as it produced a good sound. “He was quite heretic that way,” says Robinson.
In the early ’90s, Keir had helped develop Marshall’s MIDI-controllable JFX multi-effects processor. Later, his open-minded philosophy was evidenced in a presentation to Marshall customers about the effects-laden, solid-state MG amp series. Keir held up an EL34 vacuum tube in front of the room. “He said, ‘Do you know what this is? It’s a valve. It’s also an electronic component, and just like any other electronic component, it can be understood. There’s nothing magical about it just because it’s glowing and made out of glass,’” remembers Robinson.
Robinson considers Blackstar’s Series One design to be one of Keir’s masterpieces. The two of them worked on the analog preamp and power amp designs together, but what Robinson didn’t know was that Keir was also transferring their designs into the digital domain. One day, he took Robinson out to a rehearsal studio where he’d set up a Series One alongside a laptop with a primitive, 16-bit DSP evaluation module. The sounds were nearly identical to analog. “He basically cracked the code from the get-go,” says Robinson.
Blackstar’s ID Core 100—one of the latest evolutions in its ID series—is a 100-watt amp with two 50-watt speakers in stereo, boasting six voices and 12 vintage-style effects.
“The code” was how to reproduce analog sounds with digital components without loss of fidelity or sensitivity. According to Robinson, Keir built algorithms the “old-school way,” from mathematical first principles, using formulas like the Laplace transform to convert analog signals from the time domain to the complex frequency domain. Then, he was programming the results. At the same time, Keir and Robinson were cracking old 1950s textbooks on valves, deepening their understanding of the technology. They isolated and modeled every single component in an amp to the point that they were indistinguishable from the real thing, then developed a digital index system of each component, so that rather than swapping physical parts, they could do it digitally to modify the sound. In time, their analog designs have sometimes come to be reverse engineered: designed and perfected in digital format, then constructed with analog parts.
Keir made good on his proclamation about the essential simplicity of tubes when he developed Blackstar’s patented True Valve Power. “If you ever want to know why valve amps sound louder than solid-state, read the patent,” says Robinson. Primarily written by Keir with help from Robinson, the patent outlines the way that valves, the output transformer, and the speaker react to produce different amounts of voltage at different frequencies, and therefore different power delivery. “That’s part of the reason you get that feel of the resonant frequencies and the presence being fuller and more open on a valve amp,” says Robinson. “It’s to do with the impedance curves and speakers, and the ability of the valve amp to deliver the voltage constantly.”
One of the things that Keir established was that to attain tube qualities with a solid-state power amp, a circuit required two-and-a-half times the headroom. The concept came together in Blackstar’s original ID series, which combined their modeled preamp with the True Valve tech. Robinson admits the line landed in market limbo. The extra power and tech fetched a higher price tag than beginners could afford, and pros weren’t yet as popularly interested in digital. But Blackstar’s digital line now is broad, with entry-level ID combos, street-priced at $149 to $229, through to 100-watt pedalboard amps.
Keir’s experiments also got at something deeper: Amp modeling can be reduced to mathematical terms, but there’s something else at play, too. Robinson describes it as the “physical embodiment” of an amplification system. No matter the technology involved, you can’t get an 8" guitar speaker to sound like a 100-watt stack, says Robinson. “You can have a plug-in-and-play through a pair of monitor speakers, which is a great thing,” he says. “It’s not the same experience as playing with the amp in a room. The feel and the sound has a lot to do with the amplification system.”

Brave New and Old Worlds
In his role as amps and effects buyer for the world’s largest online instrument retailer, Monroe stays on top of not just what’s happening in the here-and-now, but what’s coming down the line. He says that while modeling, profiling, and other digital amp offerings are continuing to increase in popularity, he hasn’t seen a corresponding drop in tube amp sales. “It seems like [they] are not gonna go anywhere,” says Monroe. “That business is still strong.”
Monroe notes that Fender got lucky with their Tone Master series dropping right before the pandemic, and that other manufacturers have had to pause potential new digital products in development. “People were sort of in survival mode,” he says, but in the coming years Monroe expects a wave of new digital amp products.
He says that the latest swell of digital amplification is just the most recent in a cycle that has seen bursts of interest in digital technology. He notes that Line 6’s futuristic POD series, which launched in 1998, enjoyed significant uptake even with its distinctly non-analog sound. That means that younger players might be less precious about how they achieve their sound than their tube-purist counterparts, having come up listening to digital tech alongside valve amplifiers. “New players start at lower price points, and digital is more affordable almost universally,” says Monroe.
Sweetwater’s Monroe predicts that as digital amps continue to improve, they will make a dent in tube amp sales periodically, but he doubts that valves will ever fully disappear. “Whatever digital technology is coming out is always chasing the analog technology,” he says. “For that reason, I feel like that’s insurance that the old thing is never gonna go away. When the real is the goal, the artificial will never take over.”
Like Fender, Robinson says Blackstar has no intentions of attempting the sort of profiling that has launched Kemper, Fractal, and Line 6 into the digital amp profiling spotlight. “Our thing is just amp design,” he says. To a certain degree, that means uncoupling from the past. “It’s not about authentically copying this or that,” says Robinson. “We’re trying to produce the best possible and most flexible sounds, and digital technology is a tool we deploy to give guitarists the tools that they want.”
Tube amps carry with them the weight of nostalgia and Romanticism, and Norvell says there’s a good reason for that. “The dynamics of a tube amp cannot be understated,” he says. “But I think a lot of what tube amps did was not the initial intent. There were limitations to the preamp and power section, the distortion was not something everybody was going for, so it’s kind of a happy accident.”
But tube amps aren’t a great fit for every player. Recording with a tube amp at home usually includes cranking it to at least noon and putting an SM57 microphone on it. That’s not feasible at all hours of the day and night, and guitarists who live in apartments or other dense housing configurations need good tone at low volumes. For years, digital amps, which don’t require cranking for different tonal characteristics and often include a line-out option to plug right to your digital audio workstation, have inarguably provided better flexibility. “A digital amp allows you that,” says Norvell, “but the new digital amps allow you that without the [tonal] compromise.”
Norvell thinks the same pattern might be true of digital. “Innovations in gear drive innovations in music,” he says. “New genres and styles are created. I think we’re on the precipice of a digital revolution.”

Justin Chancellor’s Pedalboard
If you ever catch yourself playing air guitar to Tool, you’re probably mimicking Justin Chancellor’s parts. “Schism,” “The Pot,” “Forty Six & 2,” “H.,” “Fear Inoculum,” “Descending,” “The Grudge,” and plenty of others feature his buoyant bass riffs.
What stomps does he run his Wal, StingRay, and Fender basses through? Glad you asked. His setup is either a bass player’s dream or nightmare, but for someone as adventurous as Chancellor, this is where the party starts.
You’ll notice many of his pedals are available at your favorite guitar store, including six Boss boxes, an Ernie Ball Volume Pedal, and MXR Micro Amp. Crucial foot-operated pedals are in blue: the Dunlop JCT95 Justin Chancellor Cry Baby Wah with a Tone Bender-style fuzz circuit (far left) and DigiTech Bass Whammy (middle). He really likes using the Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 for distortion and feedback when the Whammy is engaged or he’s playing up the neck. Covering delays are three pedals—he has the pink Providence DLY-4 Chrono Delay programmed to match drummer Danny Carey’s BPMs in “Pneuma,” which slightly increase during the song from 113 ms to 115 ms. The Boss DD-3s are set for different speeds with the one labeled “Faster” handling “The Grudge” and the other one doing more steady repeats. There’s a pair of vintage Guyatone pedals—the Guyatone VT-X Vintage Tremolo Pedal (Flip Series) and Guyatone BR2 Bottom Wah Rocker (a gift from guitarist Adam Jones). The Gamechanger Audio Plus pedal is used to freeze moments and allow Justin to grab onto feedback or play over something. The Boss GEB-7 Bass Equalizer and Pro Co Turbo RAT help reinforce his resounding, beefy backbone of bass tone, while the MXR Micro Amp helps goose his grimy rumbles. The Boss LS-2 Line Selector is a one-kick escape hatch out of the complicated signal chain for parts of “Schism.” The Wal and Music Man stay in check with the TU-3S tuner, a pair of Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Pluses help bring things to life, and everything is wired up with EBS patch cables.
STURGILL SIMPSON AND LAUR JOAMETS
Sturgill Simpson’s Pedalboard
Alt-country veteran Sturgill Simpson packed light for his latest run. His board bears just a Peterson Stomp Classic tuner running into a Fulltone True-Path ABY-ST, which splits his signal to his two Magnatone Panoramic Stereo amps. “I wouldn’t use a tuner if I didn’t have to,” he chuckles. The LILY P4D beside the splitter lets him control his mic signal to cut interference from onstage noise.
Laur Joamets’ Pedalboard
For his main board, Laur Joamets packs a little heavier than his boss. The platform, made by West Coast Pedal Board, carries a Peterson StroboStomp, Greer Amps Arbuckle Trem, sRossFX fuzz/overdrive, MXR Booster, T-Rex Replica, sRossFX germanium octave pedal, TC Electronic Viscous Vibe, Dunlop EP103 Echoplex, and Source Audio True Spring Reverb. An MXR Tap lets him tap in delay tempos. He has a second pedalboard, as well, for his Stage One steel guitar. It goes into a Peterson StroboStomp HD, then on to a Greer Black Tiger and Goodrich Sound Company volume pedal, before hitting his Magnatone Varsity Reverb and a custom-built Fender brown-panel Deluxe clone he calls “the Charmer.”
PANTERA’S ZAKK WYLDE AND REX BROWN
Zakk Wylde’s Pedalboard
When Pantera’s bassist Rex Brown and singer Phil Anselmo decided to fire the band up again, the choice of fellow road dog Zakk Wylde on guitar seemed perfect. Here’s what Wylde had on the floor and in the racks for the band’s February date at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
His signature arsenal of effects seen here includes a MXR Wylde Audio Overdrive, MXR Wylde Audio Phase, Wylde Audio Cry Baby wah, and a Dunlop ZW357 Zakk Wylde Signature Rotovibe. The lone box that isn’t branded Wylde is a standard fare MXR Carbon Copy. Offstage, his rack is home to a MXR Smart Gate and MXR Wylde Audio Chorus that’s always on. Both are powered by a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 3 Plus. Another drawer holds a Radial BigShot I/O True-bypass Instrument Selector, Lehle Little Dual II Amp Switcher, and a Radial BigShot EFX Effects Loop Switcher.
Rex Brown’s Pedalboard
This tour was the first time Rex Brown used a switching system. His stage board sported a Dunlop JCT95 Justin Chancellor Cry Baby Wah, a 2000s Morley Pro Series II Bass Wah, Origin Effects DCX Bass Tone Shaper & Drive, a MXR M287 Sub Octave Bass Fuzz, and a Peterson StroboStomp HD. The brain of everything in the rack and onstage is the RJM Mastermind GT. And to help “move mountains,” Rex has a Moog Taurus III.
MSSV’S MIKE BAGGETTA AND MIKE WATT
Mike Baggetta’s Pedalboard
Mike Baggetta has some core pedals in MSSV, his indie supergroup with legendary bassist Mike Watt and drummer Stephen Hodges. His arsenal includes a Creepy Fingers Hold Tight fuzz, an Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing, a Wilson Effects Freaker Wah V2, an EHX Deluxe Memory Man, and a Red Panda Tensor. The signal flows from his Benson amp into the Tensor, which he uses for glitch sounds, harmonizing, and overdub mode, among other feats. His Memory Man adds space—the final frontier.
Mike Watt’s Pedalboard
Mike Watt puts his signature Reverend Wattplower bass into a Broughton Audio high-pass filter, an EarthQuaker Devices The Warden optical compressor, and a Sushi Box Effects Finally tube DI that functions as a preamp. There’s also a TC Electronic PolyTune.
MONONEON
MonoNeon’s Pedalboard
The Memphis-born avant-funk bassist keeps it simple on the road with a signature 5-string, a tried-and-true Ampeg stack, and just four stomps. Almost all of his stomps have been zhuzhed up in his eye-popping palette. He’d used a pitch shifting DigiTech Whammy for a while, but after working with Paisley Park royalty, the pedal became a bigger part of his playing. “When I started playing with Prince, he put the Whammy on my pedalboard,” Thomas explains. “After he passed, I realized how special that moment was.” MonoNeon also uses a Fairfield Circuitry Randy’s Revenge, a Fart Pedal (in case the Fairfield ring mod isn’t weird enough, we guess), and a JAM Pedals Red Muck covers fuzz and dirt needs. A CIOKS SOL powers the whole affair.
GRACE BOWERS
Grace Bowers’ Pedalboard
Grace Bowers is one of the freshest new guitar stars to emerge in the past year. She has the essential fixin’s for her classic rock tones: a Dunlop Crybaby Wah, Grindstone Audio Solutions Night Shade Drive, EarthQuaker Devices Tone Job, MXR Phase 90, MXR Phase 95, and Boss DD-2. Bowers powers them with a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power ISO-5.

Jason White’s Pedalboard
Long-time touring member Jason White’s stable is dominated by his Gibson Les Pauls and ES-335s. A Shure wireless system sends his signal to a rack set-up with an ISP noise gate, just in case White’s P-90s are picking up a lot of noise. From there, it hits a Dunlop Cry Baby and DVP1XL, then a MIDI-controllable RJM Effect Gizmo, which handles White’s effects: an MXR Reverb and Poly Blue Octave, Strymon TimeLine and Mobius, API Select TranZformer GTR, and a Custom Audio Electronics 3+SE Guitar Preamp, which gets engaged for clean tones and small combo sounds. A Lehle Dual SGoS Switcher and Fishman Aura DI Preamp handle changes with the piezo-equipped guitars. A Strymon Zuma provides the juice.
BONES UK’S CARMEN VANDENBERG
Carmen Vandenberg’s Pedalboard
Carmen Vandenberg covers a lot of ground with her Bones UK guitar sounds, and she’s got a carefully curated collection of stomps to span the territory. Her guitar first hits an Ernie Ball Cry Baby before running through the rest of the pedals: a Boss TU-3, Fulltone OCD, Supro Drive, Pigtronix Octava, EHX Micro POG, Supro Chorus, Blackstar Dept. 10 Boost, EarthQuaker Devices Dispatch Master, MXR Carbon Copy Deluxe, Catalinbread Belle Epoch, and Boss NS-2. A Live Wire Solutions ABY manages the signals on their way to her signature Blackstar CV30s.
BLACK PUMAS’ ADRIAN QUESADA, BRENDAN BOND, AND ERIC BURTON
Adrian Quesada’s Pedalboards
Adrian Quesada loves tremolo and reverb, and uses a Strymon Flint for both. His other main stomp is the Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail that provides a healthy dose of spring reverb. Also along for the tour: a Line 6 Echo Park, a Catalinbread Echorec, a Boss GE-7 Equalizer, a Catalinbread Belle Epoch, and an EarthQuaker Devices. The Fulltone Clyde Wah Deluxe has stepped in for a different filter sweeper. There’s also a JAM Pedals Ripple two-stage phaser, and a TC Electronic PolyTune2 Noir keeps his guitars in check. That’s all on board one.

Eric Burton’s Pedalboard
Frontman and guitarist Eric Burton is the band’s lone wireless member. To accommodate his onstage prowling, tech Bryan Wilkinson uses a Radial JDI passive direct box that takes in the XLR from the audio subsnake wireless rackmount and routes it into the first pedal: a Boss TU-3 Chromatic Tuner. From there, Burton only has a couple pedals—a DigiTech Mosaic to mimic a 12-string for “OCT 33” and a JHS Colour Box for any required heat. A Strymon Ojai turns everything on.
JASON ISBELL AND SADLER VADEN
Jason Isbell’s Pedalboards
Jason Isbell could open a huge gear shop just by clearing off his boards and racks. First off, he has a complex wet/dry/wet setup that is parsed out via a RJM Mastermind, with two Magnatone Twilight Stereo combos carrying the all-wet effects. There’s also a Radial JX44v2, which serves as the core signal manager. Above it, on the rack, is an Echo Fix Chorus Echo EF-X3R. Moving up the rack, one drawer includes an Ibanez DML10 Modulation Delay II, EarthQuaker Devices Tentacle, and a trio of stereo-field-only effects: a Boss MD-500, Strymon Volante, and Hologram Electronics Microcosm. For nearly 10 years, Vola Guitars' Japan-made instruments stood out for their somewhat unorthodox features, quality execution, visual vibes that walk the line between traditional and modern, and mid-level prices that rival industry heavyweights. In the company’s varied line of 6- and 7-string guitars (and 4- and 5-string basses), the JZ FRO is more on the traditional end. Yet it still stakes out its own territory in terms of style and performance.
Subtle Upgrades
Vola’s most distinctive aesthetic feature is undoubtedly the bodyline scoop/flourish near the rear strap button. On the JZ FRO, it lends a dash of elegance and sophistication to an outline that might otherwise seem too literally Jazzmaster-like, while the handsome roasted maple neck, swooped reverse headstock, and nonstandard pickup scheme help make it clear this isn’t your average offset. It’s a classy, understated look even in the model’s flashier aged-copper and shell-pink hues. But look closer and you’ll note appointments that a lot of seasoned guitarists will appreciate, including Luminlay position markers, stainless steel frets, and a direct-to-output circuit bypass switch situated between the volume and tone knobs.
Slicing and Then Some
It’s not often you see a solidbody outfitted with a pair of humbucker-sized P-90s anda Strat-style middle pickup. The P-90s are alnico 5 units measuring 9.5k and 10.5k ohms resistance. To avail you of this circuit’s numerous tones the JZ FRO incorporates a deceptively simple-looking control array. There’s a lone tone knob, a traditional 3-way selector, and a master volume that pulls up to bring the S-style middle pickup into the mix. In this mode, with the pickup selector down, you get the bridge and middle pickup, in the middle you get all three pickups, and in the up position you get the neck and middle pickups. (More on mid-pickup tones in a minute.)
The P-90s are pretty hot, with a lot of punch and zing. In fact, the bridge pickup’s leanness and the neck pickup’s gristliness sometimes evoke Gibson P-100s.
With the JZ FRO routed through a Celestion Ruby-outfitted 6973-powered combo set to a bit of grind, I loved the bridge pickup’s tough airiness. There’s a detailed, vintage-esque character, and it gets toothier as you pair it with a boost or dirt pedal to drive an amp hard. Compared to the vintage-spec Curtis Novak P-90s in my Les Paul Special, the Vola’s bridge pickup is a little less warm and brawny, but also probably a bit more malleable and adaptable to different genres, especially if you’ve got a lot of effects in your signal path. The neck pickup is similarly powerful, though its contrasts with a traditionally voiced P-90 feel less apparent.
How about that middle pickup? Paired with the bridge unit, it yields funky, Strat-like quack—a tone you’re not going to get with most dual P-90 guitars. Accent them with a wiggle of the super smooth-operating Gotoh trem, and the Strat allusion is even stronger. Mind you, all this tone variation is available beforeyou activate the tone-circuit bypass. It acts like a powerful onboard boost: Everything is louder, hotter, and leaner.The Verdict
Vola deserves big kudos for packing so many unique features into a guitar that feels and plays this nicely at such a reasonable price. The novel tone-circuit bypass could help you cut through a dense mix or boost your solo even when you’re away from your pedalboard. That said, in some positions I found it sounded a little strident or hi-fi, and the fact that the circuit-bypass mode renders the volume knob useless makes it something of an all-or-nothing proposition. The added middle pickup expands tonal possibilities beyond P-90 norms, but don’t expect the same type of added clarity you’d get from a Strat’s middle pickup. Even so, the JZ FRO’s exceptionally smooth performing hardware and excellent craftsmanship make playing a breeze and a pleasure, and its VFP90 pickups pack a mix of power, clarity, and flexibility that make it a great choice for biting rock and thick, bristling blues tones.

Rein in those icy high frequencies with these handy tips.
Classic vintage Fender amps are renowned for their clean, shimmering tones. However, dialing in the “sweet spot” isn’t always straightforward, especially when you're playing on a new or borrowed amp. Pair these amps with Fender guitars—also known for their brightness—and the combination can sometimes result in ear-piercing treble and overwhelming volume. An amp that’s too powerful or an unsuitable guitar pairing can easily derail the musical moment you’re trying to create. So, controlling treble is crucial, particularly with louder amps.
In this article, I’ll share my experiences with Fender amps and how I’ve tamed treble issues through guitar tweaks, speaker swaps, amp modifications, and pedals. My goal is to help you achieve those glorious vintage Fender tones without losing your ears—or your audience—in the process.
Backline Bargaining
I’m extra cautious about bringing my brightest Strats or Teles to gigs with rented backline amps. Newer Deluxe Reverbs, for example, can be particularly tricky with dialing in a smooth tone. These amps often feature bright ceramic speakers and the EQ options are limited—there’s no bright switch to dampen the top end and no mid knob to add warmth.
Here’s what I do: I start by turning down the tone knob on my Okko Twinsonic overdrive pedal, which is very transparent. My old Ibanez Tube Screamers naturally rolled off much of the high end, making them easier to pair with brighter amps.
I also adjust the microphone placement set up by the sound crew. The tone gets brighter the closer the mic is to the center of the speaker cone. I angle the SM57 slightly and aim it closer to the outer edge of the cone, leaving a 3–4 cm gap from the grill cloth. Larger 12" or 15" speakers are more forgiving in this process, while smaller 10" speakers are less so. I’ve encountered challenging amps, like a Super Reverb loaded with 10" JBL speakers featuring aluminum dust caps. These amps sounded much harsher through the PA than they did on stage, making mic placement even more critical.
Dimming the Bright Caps
Bright caps are key components in shaping an amp’s treble response. On the Deluxe Reverb, the bright cap is always enabled, which can make brighter guitars sound harsh, especially at low volumes or when using fuzz pedals. Cranking the amp helps by adding more upper mids to the mix.
For my own Deluxe Reverbs, I sometimes disable the 47 pF bright cap or, more often, install a 25k mid pot on the back panel to add warmth. It depends on the tones I’m chasing.
Smaller amps like the Fender Champ and Princeton don’t have bright caps, which naturally gives them smoother tones. But if they sound too dark or muddy, you can add a bright cap. I installed a 100 pF bright cap on my 1966 Princeton Reverb (which has a Jensen C10N speaker from the same year, though not original to the amp). After experimenting, I settled on a 47 pF cap for just the right amount of clarity.
If you’re up for a bit of DIY, experimenting with bright cap values can significantly shape your tone. Black-panel and silver-panel Fenders typically use 120 pF bright caps, with exceptions like the Deluxe (47 pF) and the Princeton and Champ (none).
Guitar Tweaks for Warmer Tones
Your guitar’s setup can also make a big difference. Thin strings combined with pickups set too close to the strings can result in a thin, overly bright tone. Here’s how I address this:
● Lower the pickups slightly. I start with a 2–2.4 mm gap on the high E string and 2.4–3.3 mm gap on the low E, measured between the pickup pole and the string when fretted at the highest fret. Then, I fine-tune by ear to balance output across pickup positions.
● Use thicker strings for a warmer, fuller tone. I tune my guitars down to Eb to deepen the sound and increase sustain. Keep in mind, though, that this can create a looser, flabbier bass response on smaller amps.
● Hotter pickups add mids and bass, naturally reducing treble dominance. Alternatively, lowering the resistance of the volume pot can smooth out the tone by filtering high frequencies. However, changing pot or cap values will alter how your guitar responds when rolling down the tone or volume knobs.
Speaker Swaps
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, speakers play a huge role in shaping your tone. Swapping speakers or experimenting with extension cabinets is one of the most effective ways to adjust treble, mids, or bass. I’ve written extensively about this in previous articles, but it’s worth emphasizing here: The right speaker pairing can make or break your tone.
