Montreal, Canada (January 14, 2012) – This January 24th to 27th at Winter NAMM in Anaheim CA, Godin Guitars will mark its 40th year as a company by unveiling two Anniversary models: The 40th Anniversary Norman B20 acoustic, with a new tobacco burst high-gloss finish, and the Limited Edition Anniversary Godin Acousticaster, with its stunning Koa or Rosewood top options. The new Acousticaster has been updated to include Godin GJN1mini-humbucker, revamped top mounted preamp, and two ¼” outputs for Electric and Acoustic/Mix. The Norman B20 was the first guitar released by the company in 1972 and the Godin Acousticaster was the original electro-acoustic hybrid guitar released under the Godin brand and essentially the guitar that put Godin on the map.

Other fine additions to the Godin family of guitars at Winter NAMM include:

Godin Montreal Premiere:
This thinline, semi-hollow body electric features a Canadian wild cherry top, back and sides, with an innovative spruce “breathe-through” carved core. This unique feature promotes free airflow through the interior center block, in turn, making the Montreal Premiere a supremely resonant and vibrant guitar. Other features include a 3-way toggle switch along with 1x volume & 1x tone knob, a 24 ¾” scale, mahogany set-neck with rosewood fingerboard, double-bound binding, high-gloss custom polished finish, contoured high-gloss headstock with high-ratio vintage style tuners, and ResoMax bridge system by Graphtech with stop tailpiece. A Bigsby equipped option is also available. Available finishes: Natural HG, Trans Red HG, Trans Black HG and Sunburst HG.

Godin MultiUke:
Make way for the new Godin MultiUke! This Canadian made, tenor size, electro-acoustic Ukulele finds its home within the renowned Godin Multiac Series of guitars, known for exceptional amplified acoustic sound without feedback. The MultiUke follows suit, in its own “little” way, featuring a chambered mahogany body design, solid spruce top, rosewood fingerboard & bridge, custom voiced electronics and onboard preamp with 3-band EQ. Available finishes: Natural HG or Sunburst HG.

Godin 5th Avenue Composer GT:
The 5th Avenue Composer GT features a Canadian wild cherry body with arched top and arched back, silver leaf maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, a Custom Godin Humbucker pickup in the neck position, controlled via 1x volume & 1x tone knob, giving the player a full, warm expression of the guitars tonal characteristics. Other features include cream binding, classic f- holes, contoured high-gloss headstock with high-ratio tuners and an adjustable Tusq bridge by Graphtech. The Gloss Top (GT) is paired with semi-gloss back & sides for an aesthetic that is second to none! Available in Natural GT or Sunburst GT finish options.

Godin Inuk Encore & Inuk Ambiance Steel fretted:
The Godin Inuk Encore Steel & Inuk Ambiance Steel are electro- acoustic, 11-string, fretted instruments featuring steel strings, which are tuned in unison. Inspired by the Godin MultiOud, the new Inuk makes for an effortless transition for guitarists looking for a unique amplified acoustic sound to add to their collection. The Inuk Encore Steel with Antique Burst semi-gloss finish features a chambered Canadian Laurentian basswood body, solid cedar top, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard & bridge, along with custom voiced Godin EPM Quantum IT electronics with under saddle transducer in the bridge & an onboard preamp with built-in tuner. The Inuk Ambiance Steel with Sunburst high-gloss finish features a chambered mahogany body, solid spruce top, mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard & bridge, along with custom voiced electronics & an onboard preamp with built-in tuner, and option to choose between 4 blend- able sound imaging mics using a 4-way selector switch.

The Spirit Fall trio: drummer Brian Blade (right) and saxophonist Chris Potter (center) joined Patitucci (left) for a single day at The Bunker. “Those guys are scary. It almost puts pressure on me, how good they are, because they get it really fast,” says Patitucci.

Legendary bassist John Patitucci continues to explore the sound of a chord-less trio that balances melodicism with boundless harmonic freedom—and shares lessons he learned from his mentors Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter.

In 1959, Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue and John Coltrane’s Giant Stepstwo of the most influential albums in jazz history—were recorded. It’s somewhat poetic that four-time Grammy-winning jazz bass icon John Patitucci was born that same year. In addition to a storied career as a bandleader, Patitucci cemented his legacy through his lengthy association with two giants of jazz: keyboardist Chick Corea, with whom Patitucci enjoyed a 10-year tenure as an original member of his Elektric and Akoustic bands, and saxophonist Wayne Shorter’s quartet, of which he was a core member for 20 years. Patitucci has also worked with a who’s who of jazz elites like Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Dizzy Gillespie, and Michael Brecker.

The National New Yorker lived at the forefront of the emerging electric guitar industry, and in Memphis Minnie’s hands, it came alive.

This National electric is just the tip of the iceberg of electric guitar history.

On a summer day in 1897, a girl named Lizzie Douglas was born on a farm in the middle of nowhere in Mississippi, the first of 13 siblings. When she was seven, her family moved closer to Memphis, Tennessee, and little Lizzie took up the banjo. Banjo led to guitar, guitar led to gigs, and gigs led to dreams. She was a prodigious talent, and “Kid” Douglas ran away from home to play for tips on Beale Street when she was just a teenager. She began touring around the South, adopted the moniker Memphis Minnie, and eventually joined the circus for a few years.

In our third installment with Santa Cruz Guitar Company founder Richard Hoover, the master luthier shows PG's John Bohlinger how his team of builders assemble and construct guitars like a chef preparing food pairings. Hoover explains that the finer details like binding, headstock size and shape, internal bracing, and adhesives are critical players in shaping an instrument's sound. Finally, Richard explains how SCGC uses every inch of wood for making acoustic guitars or outside ventures like surfboards and art.

We know Horsegirl as a band of musicians, but their friendships will always come before the music. From left to right: Nora Cheng, drummer Gigi Reece, and Penelope Lowenstein.

The Chicago-via-New York trio of best friends reinterpret the best bits of college-rock and ’90s indie on their new record, Phonetics On and On.

Horsegirl guitarists Nora Cheng and Penelope Lowenstein are back in their hometown of Chicago during winter break from New York University, where they share an apartment with drummer Gigi Reece. They’re both in the middle of writing papers. Cheng is working on one about Buckminster Fuller for a city planning class, and Lowenstein is untangling Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann’s short story, “Three Paths to the Lake.”
