For a quarter of a century, Vaden Todd Lewis and his band has been spreading alt-rock jams around the world. Lewis, guitarist Clark Vogeler (above right) and bassist Doni Blair did a pre-soundcheck chat with PG before their sold-out show at Nashville’s Exit/In.
Vaden Lewis tours with two nearly identical Gibson SG ’61 reissues, both stock with ’57 Classic pickups. These SGs stay strung up with Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky strings.
Lewis is a longtime Marshall man. He keeps his JCM 800 stock and puts it through a Marshall 4x12 slant cab.
Vaden runs a cable from his SG into a Boss GE-7. From there, the signal hits an MXR Carbon Copy, Fulltone Full-Drive 2, Ibanez TS9DX Turbo Tube Screamer, Electro-Harmonix Holy Stain, MXR Micro Amp, and a Boss TU-3 Tuner.
Doni Blair plays a Fender Steve Harris Precision bass that features Seymour Duncan Steve Harris SPB-4 pickups and a Fender High-Mass bridge. Blair strings this beast with Ernie Ball (.045–.105) strings.
Blair tours with two Acoustic B600H amps (one is a backup). He runs these old-school monsters into an Ampeg 8x10 cab.
Blair’s board starts with a Boss TU-3 Tuner before going into a MicroTubes B7K Analog Bass Preamp and a Malekko B:ASSMaster that sends the signal to his amp. Pedals are powered by a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power ISO-5.
Clark Vogeler spends most of his time on this “parts” guitar he helped assemble. He started with a Warmoth Jazzmaster body that he routed out for a Floyd Rose tremolo. Next, he added a Warmoth Strat neck with a string lock. The last ingredients are two Seymour Duncan pickups.
Vogeler goes with an Orange Rocker 30 combo amp that he runs into an Orange 4x12 cab.
Vogeler’s modest pedalboard starts with an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer. From there, the signal hits a Boss TU-3 and Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Max that sends the signal to the amp. Pedals are powered by a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power ISO-5.
