PRS Guitars Announces the S2 Vela

A new offset body shape that is at once elegant and edgy.

Stevensville, MD (March 10, 2015) -- PRS Guitars is pleased to announce a new model for the S2 Series – the S2 Vela. A vintage-inspired guitar with loads of personality and tonal textures, the Vela continues in the style of the Mira and Starla models. The Vela boasts a new offset body shape that is at once elegant and edgy. Its pickguard loaded electronics feature a PRS-Designed Starla pickup in the bridge, providing a bright, punky tone, and the new PRS-Designed Type-D Singlecoil in the neck that gives the Vela some noteworthy bite. The coil-tap on the tone control allows the bridge pickup to split to singlecoils, providing a balanced tone that will cut through the mix with style. Anchoring this guitar is a new PRS plate-style bridge with two saddles that were designed to compensate for intonation. This bridge harkens back to Paul’s early designs and traditional bass plate-style bridges, but is top-loading for easy restringing. Like the bridge found on Paul’s Guitar and some Private Stock models, PRS’s new plate-style bridge features brass saddles and an aluminum plate for maximum tonal sustain.

As you know, our excitement around the S2 series not only stems from what it offers but how we got here. The S2 Series pushed us to think about guitar building in a new way while reminding us that there is never a substitution for feel and tone. We blended new design elements and manufacturing techniques with practiced quality control and craftsmanship to bring you reimagined, fresh guitars that reach a more affordable price point for customers. It continues to be an intensely rewarding project.

Luthier Maegen Wells recalls the moment she fell in love with the archtop and how it changed her world.

The archtop guitar is one of the greatest loves of my life, and over time it’s become clear that our tale is perhaps an unlikely one. I showed up late to the archtop party, and it took a while to realize our pairing was atypical. I had no idea that I had fallen head-over-heels in love with everything about what’s commonly perceived as a “jazz guitar.” No clue whatsoever. And, to be honest, I kind of miss those days. But one can only hear the question, “Why do you want to build jazz guitars if you don’t play jazz?” so many times before starting to wonder what the hell everyone’s talking about.

After many decades of sticking with flagship body shapes, Fender spent the last several years getting more playful via their Parallel Universe collection. The Meteora, however, is one of the more significant departures from those vintage profiles. The offset, more-angular profile was created by Fender designer Josh Hurst and first saw light of day as part of the Parallel Universe Collection in 2018. Since then, it has headed in both upscale and affordable directions within the Fender lineup—reaching the heights of master-built Custom Shop quality in the hands of Ron Thorn, and now in this much more egalitarian guise as the Player Plus Meteora HH.
