“Strangled cat" and "glassy Jonny Greenwood” are just two attitudes the former Beck and Shins sidewoman engages in her band’s adventurous indie-rock.

“When I got turned onto BilT by Nels, I started talking to them about guitars and I really wanted to create a marriage between my Jazzmaster and Starcaster,” says Dobson. “The weight of the Starcaster became an issue for me, so the S.S. Zaftig, being a lighter semi-hollow, was the perfect solution.” Working with the BilT crew, Jessica dropped in a set of Lollar El Rayos (“their most single-coil-sounding humbuckers,” adds Dobson).

It’s ok for a guitar to not sound like a guitar.

As much as we all love juicy, organic guitar tones, it can be just as inspiring to go the opposite way. Combining various modulation effects, envelope filters, oscillators, and more can result in sounds that owe more to Kraftwerk than Led Zeppelin.
